Which isopod is right for your setup
Powder Blue and Powder Orange (Porcellionides pruinosus). Hardy and beginner-friendly, and the most popular starter isopod: fast breeding, with excellent cleanup performance. Suited to dart frog vivariums, crested gecko enclosures and any humid bioactive setup. Powder Orange is the orange colour morph of the same species, with identical care.
Dwarf White (Trichorhina tomentosa). The smallest commonly available isopod. A good fit for small vivariums and dart frog setups, where larger isopods can disturb small frogs. They breed prolifically and establish quickly.
Dairy Cow (Porcellio laevis). Medium-sized, with a black-and-white spotted pattern, and moderately fast breeding. Works well in a bioactive setup and as a pet species in its own enclosure.
Collector species: Papaya, Rubber Ducky and Panda King (Cubaris). Colourful or distinctive species for people who keep isopods as a hobby. They breed more slowly than the common species. They need more substrate depth (at least 3 to 4 inches, so they can burrow and moult safely) and a true moisture gradient, with one side consistently damp and the other nearly dry.
Spiky Pineapple (Pseudoarmadillidium sp.). A textured collector species, and not tropical. Keep it airy and on the dry side, with one reliably damp retreat, and do not mist the whole enclosure.
Care in brief
For the common species: a moist organic substrate (coconut fiber, leaf litter and sphagnum moss), 70 to 80°F, and 60 to 80% humidity with both moist and dry areas. Food is mostly leaf litter, with decaying wood, fish flakes and a calcium source such as cuttlebone. Collector species want warmer and wetter conditions: 75 to 80°F and 75 to 90% humidity.
Pair them with springtails
