Springtails are the first line of defence in a bioactive enclosure. They consume decaying organic matter before mold forms, they multiply on their own, and in a humid tank they work where larger cleanup animals cannot.

Tropical or temperate (dry)?

Tropical springtails are the standard for humid tropical vivariums: dart frog enclosures, tree frog setups and tropical bioactive builds. Culture them on charcoal or substrate, keep them moist but never waterlogged, at room temperature (68 to 80°F), and feed yeast, rice or mushroom.

Temperate (dry) springtails tolerate lower humidity than tropicals. They suit arid and semi-arid bioactive setups: bearded dragon enclosures, leopard gecko vivariums and other dry-climate builds. Culture on charcoal or dry substrate at room temperature.

What springtails are used for

Mold control. The first natural defence against terrarium mold and fungus.
Dart frog food. A supplemental daily feeder alongside fruit flies.
Bioactive essential. Almost every bioactive vivarium uses them.

Pair them with isopods

Springtails handle mold, and isopods handle larger waste. Together they give complete cleanup. See our isopods.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tropical and temperate springtails?

Tropicals suit humid enclosures. Temperates tolerate drier conditions, so they suit arid and semi-arid setups.

How do I keep a culture going?

Keep it moist but never waterlogged, at room temperature, on charcoal or substrate, and feed yeast, rice or mushroom.

Will springtails replace isopods?

No. Springtails deal with mold, and isopods deal with larger waste. They do different jobs.

Is there a guarantee?
