BSFL vs Superworms: Which Feeder Is Better?
BSFL vs Superworms: Different Roles, Different Strengths
BSFL and superworms could not be more different nutritionally. BSFL are calcium specialists; superworms are protein-and-fat heavyweights. Understanding this distinction helps you use each one correctly.
| Nutrient | BSFL | Superworms |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | ~17% | ~20% |
| Fat | ~14% | ~18% |
| Calcium | 9,340 mg/kg | 100 mg/kg |
| Ca:P Ratio | 6.92:1 | 0.16:1 |
| Dusting needed? | No | Yes |
| Bite risk | None | Can bite |
| Safe for juveniles? | Yes | Adults only |
The Calcium Gap
BSFL contain 93 times more calcium than superworms. Superworms at 0.16:1 Ca:P are phosphorus-heavy — they actively deplete calcium stores. BSFL at 6.92:1 do the opposite.
Fat and Protein
Superworms edge out BSFL slightly in protein (20% vs 17%) and have higher fat (18% vs 14%). This makes superworms a high-energy treat feeder, while BSFL are a calcium supplement. Both are higher in fat than discoid roaches (7%) or silkworms (1%).
Safety
Superworms have strong mandibles and can bite — some keepers crush the head before feeding. BSFL cannot bite. Superworms are not recommended for juveniles due to tough chitin; BSFL are safe for all ages.
Best Use
BSFL: Calcium supplement, 1-3x/week, no dusting. Superworms: High-energy treat for adults, 1x/week max, always dust with calcium. Neither replaces a daily protein staple like discoid roaches.
