BSFL vs Waxworms: Which Is Better for Your Reptile?

By Matt Goren2 min read

BSFL vs Waxworms: No Contest

This is one of the most lopsided comparisons in the feeder insect world. BSFL and waxworms could not be more different nutritionally — BSFL are a calcium powerhouse, while waxworms are essentially junk food.

Nutrient BSFL Waxworms
Calcium 9,340 mg/kg 80 mg/kg
Ca:P Ratio 6.92:1 0.13:1
Fat 14% 25%
Protein 17% 14%
Addictive? No Yes — many reptiles refuse other food after waxworms

BSFL contain 1,168 times more calcium than waxworms, have nearly half the fat, more protein, and do not create the feeding behavior problems that waxworms are notorious for. Waxworms are so palatable that many bearded dragons and leopard geckos become addicted — refusing all other feeders and holding out for more waxworms.

When to Use Each

BSFL: 1-3x per week as a calcium supplement. Healthy, sustainable, no behavioral downsides.

Waxworms: Very rare treat only — once every 2 weeks at most. Useful for enticing sick animals back to food, but overuse causes obesity and food refusal. Many experienced keepers avoid waxworms entirely.

If you are currently using waxworms regularly, switching to BSFL gives your reptile a treat-like feeder with dramatically better nutrition and zero addiction risk.
