BSFL vs Hornworms: Two Premium Feeders, Two Different Jobs
BSFL and hornworms are both premium supplemental feeders — but they specialize in completely different nutritional areas. BSFL are the calcium king; hornworms are the hydration king. Understanding this distinction helps you use both effectively.
| Nutrient | BSFL | Hornworms |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium | 9,340 mg/kg | 460 mg/kg |
| Ca:P Ratio | 6.92:1 | 3.07:1 |
| Moisture | ~61% | ~85% |
| Fat | ~14% | ~3% |
| Protein | ~17% | ~9% |
| Shelf life | 2-3 weeks (fridge) | 5-10 days (grow fast) |
When to Use Each
Choose BSFL When:
- Your reptile needs a calcium boost — especially juveniles, egg-laying females, or species prone to MBD
- You want a feeder that requires no calcium dusting
- You need longer shelf life (2-3 weeks vs days)
Choose Hornworms When:
- Your reptile is dehydrated or needs moisture support (chameleons, shedding reptiles)
- You need to stimulate appetite in a picky or sick animal (bright color triggers feeding)
- You want the lowest fat option (3% vs BSFL's 14%)
Best Approach: Use Both
They complement each other perfectly in a feeding rotation:
- Daily: Discoid roaches (protein staple)
- 2-3x/week: Silkworms (low-fat premium)
- 1-2x/week: BSFL (calcium — no dusting)
- 1-2x/week: Hornworms (hydration + calcium)
Each feeder fills a specific niche. Together they create the most complete insect feeding program available.
