BSFL vs Hornworms: Two Premium Feeders, Two Different Jobs

BSFL and hornworms are both premium supplemental feeders — but they specialize in completely different nutritional areas. BSFL are the calcium king; hornworms are the hydration king. Understanding this distinction helps you use both effectively.

Nutrient BSFL Hornworms
Calcium 9,340 mg/kg 460 mg/kg
Ca:P Ratio 6.92:1 3.07:1
Moisture ~61% ~85%
Fat ~14% ~3%
Protein ~17% ~9%
Shelf life 2-3 weeks (fridge) 5-10 days (grow fast)

When to Use Each

Choose BSFL When:

  • Your reptile needs a calcium boost — especially juveniles, egg-laying females, or species prone to MBD
  • You want a feeder that requires no calcium dusting
  • You need longer shelf life (2-3 weeks vs days)

Choose Hornworms When:

  • Your reptile is dehydrated or needs moisture support (chameleons, shedding reptiles)
  • You need to stimulate appetite in a picky or sick animal (bright color triggers feeding)
  • You want the lowest fat option (3% vs BSFL's 14%)

Best Approach: Use Both

They complement each other perfectly in a feeding rotation:

Each feeder fills a specific niche. Together they create the most complete insect feeding program available.
