BSFL for Koi and Pond Fish: High-Protein Live Food
Matt GorenShare
BSFL for Koi and Pond Fish
Koi, goldfish, cichlids, and other omnivorous fish species thrive on BSFL as a high-protein, calcium-rich live food supplement. BSFL float when first placed on the water surface, attracting surface feeders, then slowly sink for bottom feeders — giving all fish in the pond or tank a chance.
Why BSFL for Fish?
| Benefit | Details |

| Protein | 17% — supports growth and color vibrancy |
| Calcium | 9,340 mg/kg — supports bone and scale health |

Best Fish Species for BSFL
- Koi — eagerly consume BSFL from the surface. Great for hand-feeding to build trust.
- Large goldfish — fancy goldfish and commons both accept BSFL.
- Cichlids — oscars, jack dempseys, and other predatory cichlids strike BSFL aggressively.
- Arowana — premium live food for premium fish.
- Flowerhorn — high protein supports nuchal hump development.
- Turtle tanks — aquatic turtles eat BSFL readily from the water surface.
How to Feed
Drop 5-20 BSFL onto the water surface. Fish will strike within seconds. Feed 2-3x per week as a supplement to regular fish food. Remove any uneaten larvae after 10 minutes to maintain water quality.
Dried BSFL also work for fish — they float and are easier to portion. Live BSFL provide more enrichment through movement.
Storage
Refrigerate live BSFL at 50-55°F for 2-3 weeks. Dried BSFL store at room temperature for months.
