When to Choose Dried Over Live

Dried BSFL are the better choice when shelf life and convenience matter more than movement enrichment. Specific use cases where dried excels:

• Backyard chickens and poultry: Chickens eat dried BSFL just as eagerly as live ones. The months-long shelf life makes dried the practical choice for daily flock feeding.
• Fish: Dried BSFL float longer on the water surface, are easier to portion, and do not foul the water as quickly as uneaten live larvae. Koi, cichlids, and goldfish accept dried BSFL readily.
• Omnivore food mixing: Dried BSFL mix easily into blue tongue skink meals or bearded dragon salads as a calcium-enriching topping without the wriggling factor that some omnivore mixes do not require.
• Travel and convenience: No refrigeration needed. Toss a bag in your travel kit when visiting reptile shows or staying overnight somewhere with your animals.

Important Note for Reptile Keepers

Most reptiles that hunt live prey — leopard geckos, chameleons, bearded dragons (when offered insects) — will not eat dried BSFL. These species need the movement trigger that only live BSFL provide. Dried BSFL are best for species and situations where live movement is not required: chickens, fish, food bowl mixing, and omnivore toppings.

Storage

Store in a sealed container at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Properly stored dried BSFL maintain their nutritional value for 6-12 months.
