Collection: BSFL for Fish

Black Soldier Fly Larvae for Fish — High-Protein, High-Calcium Live Food

Koi, cichlids, arowana, oscar fish, flowerhorn, large goldfish, and other omnivorous or predatory fish species thrive on BSFL as a high-protein, calcium-rich live food supplement. At All Angles Creatures, we ship fresh BSFL from our Florida facility that arrive alive and ready to drop into your pond or tank.

Why Fish Keepers Love BSFL

BSFL offer a nutritional profile that commercial fish pellets and flakes cannot match in terms of natural enrichment. At approximately 17% protein, they support growth and color vibrancy in ornamental fish. Their 9,340 mg/kg calcium supports bone and scale health. And as live food, they trigger the natural predatory feeding behavior that keeps fish mentally stimulated and physically active — especially important for intelligent species like oscars, flowerhorns, and arowana.

How BSFL Behave in Water

When dropped onto the water surface, BSFL float initially — attracting surface-feeding fish like koi and goldfish. Over the next few minutes, they absorb water and slowly sink, becoming available to mid-water and bottom-feeding species. This natural flotation-to-sinking behavior gives every fish in the pond or tank a chance to feed, regardless of their preferred feeding zone.

Fish Type BSFL per Feeding Frequency
Koi (pond) 20-50 per session 2-3x per week
Large cichlids (oscar, flowerhorn) 5-15 2-3x per week
Arowana 10-20 2-3x per week
Large goldfish 5-10 2-3x per week

Live vs Dried for Fish

Live BSFL provide movement enrichment and full moisture content. Dried BSFL float longer, are easier to portion, and store at room temperature for months — making them more convenient for daily use. Many fish keepers use both: dried for routine feedings, live for enrichment sessions.

Water Quality

Remove uneaten BSFL after 10 minutes to maintain water quality. BSFL decompose slower than commercial food in water, but any uneaten organic matter should be removed to prevent ammonia spikes in enclosed tank environments. In outdoor ponds, uneaten BSFL are typically consumed by bottom-feeding organisms.

Storage

Live BSFL: refrigerator at 50-55°F for 2-3 weeks. Dried BSFL: room temperature in a sealed container for 6-12 months.
