Axanthic GFP Axolotl

One animal carrying both genes. Each one is inherited separately, so this combination is made by bringing them together rather than being a gene of its own.

The two genes

Axanthic
recessive
Grey to near-black, with the yellow and red pigment cells absent.
GFP
dominant
Carries a jellyfish gene inserted in a laboratory, which makes the tissue glow green under blue or ultraviolet light. Invisible in ordinary light.

How one is made

Both genes have to come together in the same animal. The pairing that does it most directly is Axanthic × GFP, which works out every outcome and its odds.

Worth knowing

GFP. This is a transgene from laboratory research stock, not a mutation that arose in axolotls. One copy is enough to see it, so a GFP animal bred to a normal one produces about half GFP offspring.
