Springtail Care Guide: Culturing, Feeding, and Uses

Springtails (Collembola) are tiny jumping microfauna that serve two essential roles in the reptile and amphibian hobby: bioactive mold control in terrariums and supplemental food for dart frogs. Understanding how to culture and use them ensures your vivariums stay mold-free and your dart frogs always have food available.

What Are Springtails?

Springtails are tiny (1-2mm) arthropods that live in moist soil and leaf litter. They consume mold, fungus, bacteria, and decaying organic matter. When disturbed, they jump using a forked appendage called a furcula — hence the name. They are completely harmless to humans, reptiles, and amphibians.

Culturing Springtails at Home

Step Details
Container 16-32oz deli cup or small plastic container with ventilation holes in lid
Substrate Charcoal (horticultural charcoal or activated) — springtails thrive on charcoal surfaces
Moisture Add dechlorinated water to keep charcoal moist but not flooded (thin layer of water at bottom is fine)
Food Sprinkle small amount of brewer's yeast, fish flakes, or uncooked rice every 3-5 days
Temperature Room temperature (68-80°F). Warmer = faster reproduction.
Harvest Flood the container, springtails float to surface, pour into vivarium or feeding dish

Tropical vs Temperate Springtails

  • Tropical Springtails: The standard for humid vivariums — dart frog enclosures, crested gecko setups, tree frog vivariums. Prefer 70-85% humidity.
  • Temperate (Dry) Springtails: For arid and semi-arid bioactive setups — bearded dragon enclosures, leopard gecko vivariums. Tolerate lower humidity.
  • Pink Springtails: Same function as tropical, with a colorful twist.
  • Bylas Ant Springtails: Larger species — more visible, slightly larger food for dart frogs.

Using Springtails in Bioactive Terrariums

Add springtails to your vivarium 2-4 weeks before introducing your animal. This gives them time to establish a breeding population in the substrate. Once established, they are self-sustaining — consuming mold and fungus that would otherwise overtake a humid enclosure. Pair with isopods for complete cleanup coverage.

Using Springtails as Dart Frog Food

Springtails are a supplemental feeder for dart frogs — especially valuable between fruit fly feedings. In a bioactive dart frog vivarium with established springtail populations, the frogs graze on springtails throughout the day, supplementing their fruit fly diet with additional protein and variety.
