Silk Electronics That Dissolve

Electronics With an Expiry Date

Silk fibroin is being used to build electronic devices that are designed to dissolve. Not fail — dissolve, on purpose, on a timescale the maker chooses. It is one of the odder places a caterpillar's protein has ended up.

Why Fibroin Suits This

The property list is unusual for one material:

  • Biocompatible — the body tolerates it
  • Adjustably biodegradable — the rate can be tuned
  • Optically transmissive — it can be made transparent
  • Mechanically strong enough to act as a substrate

Most materials give you two of those. Fibroin gives all four, which is why it turns up as the flexible base layer in devices meant to sit on or inside a body.

What Has Been Built

Wearable sensors, energy harvesters, filters, lenses and memristors — memory devices — have all been constructed on silk fibroin. A reported biodegradable fibroin-based wearable sensor achieved a sensitivity of 5.63 kPa⁻¹, a response time of 147 milliseconds, and stability across 15,000 cycles.

Those are working-device numbers, not a proof of concept.

Programmable Disappearance

The strangest result is the resorbable memristor array: fully resorbable, biocompatible memory crossbars that switch normally and then biodegrade, with a programmable device lifetime. Fibroin films patterned with silver nanowires have been made into sensors that dissolve on contact with water.

The application is obvious once stated: an implanted sensor that monitors healing and then vanishes needs no second surgery to remove it.

And It Can Be Made From Waste

Regenerated fibroin does not require pristine cocoons. Work on recycling silk selvage and cocoon waste has produced fibroin nanofibres and, using higher-molecular-weight fibroin, regenerated fibres with high strength and toughness.

A protein spun by a caterpillar, recovered from textile offcuts, made into a sensor that dissolves. Very little about the silkworm turns out to be a dead end.
