Silk in Medicine: Sutures, Scaffolds and Transgenic Silkworms

Silk Is an Approved Medical Material

Silk fibroin is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for clinical use, most familiarly as surgical suture. Silk sutures are not a folk remedy or a historical curiosity — they are a regulated medical product, and they are the reason silk has a foothold in medicine that other natural fibres do not.

Scaffolds and Regenerative Medicine

Because fibroin is a protein the body tolerates, can be formed into porous structures, and breaks down over time, it is heavily studied as a scaffold for tissue engineering — a three-dimensional framework that cells can grow into while the material gradually degrades and leaves tissue behind.

The same properties make it interesting for drug delivery: a silk matrix can be loaded with a drug and release it slowly as the matrix breaks down, rather than all at once.

The protein the textile industry discarded for centuries is now studied for biomedical use in its own right, including wound dressings and cancer-therapy formulations. A waste stream became a research material.

Transgenic Silkworms: the Animal as a Factory

This is where the silkworm's history as a model organism and its history as a protein factory meet. Silkworms can be genetically modified to spin something other than ordinary silk.

Two directions matter. The first is modifying the silk itself — producing fibroin with altered properties, including work toward spider-silk-like materials, which spiders themselves cannot be farmed to supply because they are territorial and cannibalistic. Companies now pursue high-performance spider-silk materials commercially.

The second is more radical: using the silk gland to manufacture proteins that have nothing to do with silk at all. Transgenic silkworms are already used industrially to produce recombinant human proteins, turning an animal domesticated for textiles into a production system for biologics.

None of this changes what a silkworm is on your shelf: a soft, calcium-balanced feeder that will not survive a night in the fridge. But it is worth knowing that the reason so much is understood about this insect — its genome, its hormones, its life cycle — is that it has been a laboratory animal for as long as it has been a farm animal.
