Hornworm vs Silkworm: Storage and Shelf-Life Compared
The Storage Paradox
Both hornworms and silkworms are live caterpillar feeders, but they have opposite storage philosophies. Hornworms (Manduca) need cold to stay fresh; silkworms (Bombyx) need room temperature. This difference isn't trivial—it changes how you plan your feeding rotation, where you store each feeder, and how long you can expect them to remain viable. Understanding the distinction prevents waste and keeps your feeding schedule running smoothly.
Hornworm Storage: Cold and Long Window
Hornworms thrive in cold storage at 50-55°F, which slows their metabolism and delays molting. Stored correctly in a household refrigerator, a cup of hornworms remains fresh and active for one to two weeks. The cold is not optional—leaving them at room temperature causes rapid deterioration (3-5 days), darkening, and reduced feeding appeal. The trade-off for the cold requirement is the extended usable window: you can buy one cup, use it slowly over 10-14 days, and still have fresh worms for every planned feeding.
Cold storage also significantly delays pupation. Hornworms mature and eventually pupate as they grow, but the cold slows this process substantially. A refrigerated cup won't show signs of pupation-readiness for many weeks, whereas a room-temperature cup might show early pupation signs within just a couple of weeks. This makes cold storage essential not just for freshness, but for extending the window before the worms reach end-of-life and pupate.
Silkworm Storage: Room Temperature and Shorter Window
Silkworms require room temperature (68-75°F) storage and actually deteriorate quickly in cold. A silkworm cup left in the refrigerator will show depressed activity and higher mortality rates. They need room-temperature air—a cool closet, a shelf away from direct heat—but cold storage is counterproductive. This creates a storage-location logistics challenge that hornworms don't: while hornworms naturally fit into your refrigerator alongside food, silkworms need their own shelf space elsewhere.
Silkworms also have a shorter usable window than hornworms—typically 7-10 days before they begin showing signs of decline, molting, or pupation. The combination of room-temperature storage and shorter shelf-life means you need to rotate silkworm cups more frequently. Buying a single cup and stretching it over two weeks doesn't work; you need regular access to fresh cups if you're using silkworms as a rotating feeder.
Pupation Timeline: Comparison
Both are caterpillars destined for pupation, but the timing differs. Refrigerated hornworms can remain in larval form for many weeks without pupating. Room-temperature silkworms approach pupation much more rapidly—within 10-14 days, depending on temperature and individual maturity. This means a silkworm cup has a hard deadline: once you see worms beginning to slow down, spin silk, or turn tan-colored, the cup is essentially done. Silkworms that have begun pupating are no longer suitable feeders.
The faster pupation timeline makes silkworms higher-maintenance from a timing perspective. You need to use them up quickly, and you need regular fresh access. Hornworms, by contrast, stay in feeding-ready form for weeks if stored properly, giving you a much larger margin for flexible scheduling.
Cost Per Feeding With Shelf-Life Factored In
Shelf-life impacts true cost per feeding. A $15 hornworm cup that lasts 14 days and yields 10-15 feeding sessions is cost-efficient. You use the cup fully and waste nothing. A $15 silkworm cup with a 7-10 day window and only 4-7 usable feedings is more costly per feeding when waste is factored in. If you can only manage silkworms on an irregular schedule or can't commit to frequent feeding, the shelf-life disadvantage becomes real—you'll throw away unused worms more often.
For keepers with frequent, regular feeding schedules (daily or near-daily), silkworms' shorter shelf-life is less problematic because you're using the cup quickly by design. For keepers with 1-3 weekly feeding sessions, hornworms' extended shelf-life is a significant practical advantage.
Logistics: Refrigerator Space vs Counter Space
Hornworm storage in the refrigerator takes minimal space (one cup-sized container) and integrates easily into most household refrigerators. The tradeoff is having to remember it's there and not accidentally knocking over a feeder cup while reaching for food. Some keepers use a dedicated small shelf or bin for live feeders to prevent accidents.
Silkworms require room-temperature storage, so they live on a shelf, closet, or designated feeding area away from heat sources and direct light. This can be logistically easier (no refrigerator space required) or harder (you need another dedicated storage location), depending on your household setup. If you're already tight on refrigerator space but have a cool closet available, silkworms might be the better option despite their shorter shelf-life. If refrigerator space is abundant and you prefer consolidated storage, hornworms' cold-storage requirement fits neatly.
Climate Considerations
In hot climates, maintaining 50-55°F refrigeration for hornworms is straightforward—any functioning refrigerator achieves it. Room-temperature silkworm storage, though, can become problematic in very hot environments. A room-temperature storage shelf in a home that regularly hits 80-85°F is stressful for silkworms; they prefer cooler room temperatures and will deteriorate faster in persistent heat. Hornworms, by contrast, prefer the 50-55°F cold in any climate, making them more climate-stable.
In mild or cool climates, both feeders are easier to maintain. A naturally cool basement or closet that hovers around 55-60°F is excellent for hornworms and acceptable for silkworms (though silkworms might prefer it slightly warmer). Climate matching matters for both.
Feeding Schedule Flexibility
Hornworms accommodate irregular feeding schedules better. If you planned to feed twice weekly but one session gets cancelled, the hornworms keep for another week without issue. Silkworms require more predictable consumption. A cup of silkworms purchased for regular feedings becomes a waste risk if plans change or feeding frequency drops unexpectedly.
For a keeper with a flexible or unpredictable schedule—life happens, animals get sick, feeding sessions shift—hornworms' storage resilience is genuinely valuable. For a keeper with a locked-in daily or near-daily feeding routine, silkworms' shorter shelf-life is less problematic and might not matter much.
Practical Recommendation
Choose hornworms if: you value flexibility, have a refrigerator available, want to minimize feeding-session waste, or feed 1-3 times weekly. Choose silkworms if: you prefer room-temperature storage, feed daily or near-daily with high predictability, have limited refrigerator space, or live in a climate where keeping hornworms at proper temperature is difficult. Ideally, keepers rotate both: hornworms as the primary supplement (due to storage resilience and flexibility), silkworms as an occasional variety feeder when the feeding schedule supports their shorter shelf-life.
Storage and shelf-life aren't the only factors distinguishing these feeders—nutrition, size, and feeding response differ too—but they're the practical day-to-day difference between a feeder that integrates smoothly into your routine and one that requires constant attention to prevent waste. Know your schedule, know your storage capacity, and choose accordingly.
