How Many BSFL Should You Feed Your Reptile?
BSFL are a calcium supplement, not a protein staple. Feed them alongside a protein-rich staple like discoid roaches — not as a replacement. Here are quantities by species.
| Animal | Age/Size | BSFL per Feeding | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearded dragon | Baby (0-3 mo) | 10-20 | Daily (part of mix) |
| Bearded dragon | Adult | 10-20 | 2-3x per week |
| Leopard gecko | All ages | 5-10 | 2-3x per week |
| Chameleon | Adult | 5-10 | 1-2x per week |
| Blue tongue skink | Adult | 5-10 (in meal) | 1-2x per week |
| Monitor/tegu | Juvenile | 15-30 | 2-3x per week |
| Crested gecko | Adult | 3-5 | 1x per week |
| Dart frog (large spp.) | Adult | 2-5 (small only) | 1-2x per week |
| Chicken (per bird) | Adult | 50-100 (handful) | Daily treat |
| Hedgehog | Adult | 5-10 | 2-3x per week |
| Sugar glider | Adult | 3-5 | 2-3x per week |
Key Principles
- BSFL are a supplement, not a staple. Use alongside discoid roaches (protein) and silkworms (low-fat).
- No dusting needed — BSFL at 6.92:1 Ca:P are naturally calcium-loaded.
- Offer in a dish for species that struggle with sedentary prey — concentrates the wriggling.
- More is not always better — BSFL at 14% fat are moderate. Stick to the recommended frequencies.
