Hornworm Storage Guide: Temperature and Shelf Life

Hornworms are living organisms with metabolic rates driven by temperature. The standard storage recommendation for hornworms is 50–55°F, and this is not arbitrary—it's based on the biology of hornworm development. At this temperature range, the metabolic rate slows dramatically. Growth slows. Molting slows. The hornworms enter a kind of "holding pattern" where they consume minimal food, produce minimal waste, and remain relatively stable in size.
If you store hornworms warmer than 55°F, their metabolism accelerates. They eat more voraciously, grow faster, and molt more frequently. A cup of hornworms kept at room temperature can visibly increase in size within days. If you store them colder than 50°F, you risk placing them into torpor or causing stress that can lead to death.
The 50–55°F window is the sweet spot: cold enough to slow growth and extend usable shelf life, warm enough to keep the animals metabolically active and healthy.
How to Achieve Ideal Storage Temperature
A standard household refrigerator operates at about 38–40°F, which is colder than the ideal hornworm storage range. A vegetable crisper drawer, which is typically 5–10°F warmer than the main refrigerator compartment, gets closer but still may not hit the 50–55°F window precisely. The most reliable approach is a wine cooler or beverage refrigerator, which maintains temperatures in the 45–65°F range and allows you to dial in the specific setting.
If a wine cooler isn't available, a basement or cool closet in a climate-controlled home can work—monitor the temperature with a simple thermometer to confirm you're in the right range. Avoid storage in unheated garages or outdoor spaces where temperature fluctuates with weather. Consistency matters more than perfection; a steady 55°F is better than swings between 45°F and 65°F.
Shelf Life Expectations: 1-2 Weeks
Under ideal storage conditions at 50–55°F, a cup of hornworms remains suitable for feeding for 1–2 weeks. This isn't a hard cutoff—it's a practical window based on how the animals grow and develop even under refrigeration. After two weeks, you'll begin to notice that some hornworms in the cup are noticeably larger than others, and a few may be approaching pre-pupation behavior (discussed below).
Freshness matters for feeding appeal as well. Newly-received hornworms are vigorous, moving actively and striking maximum response in your reptile. As they age, they become progressively less active, which can reduce their effectiveness as feeding triggers for reluctant eaters. For maximum benefit—particularly if you're using hornworms to restart a picky eater—use them within the first week of receipt.
Signs Hornworms Have Outgrown Their Feeding Window
Size Increase. Compare the hornworms in your cup to the original shipping photo. Significant size growth indicates that they're aging past their ideal feeding size for many applications. Larger hornworms may still be fed to larger reptiles, but they're no longer suitable for species that typically prefer smaller prey.
Instar Progression. Hornworms molt as they grow, shedding their exoskeleton and emerging at a larger size. If you notice a dramatic size spread in your cup—some tiny, some substantially larger—molting has occurred, and the older individuals are entering their later instars. This size spread can make it difficult to select appropriately-sized prey items.
Reduced Activity. Fresh hornworms are constantly moving, crawling, and wriggling. As they age, their movement becomes more lethargic. This reduced activity correlates with reduced feeding-response trigger power. A sluggish hornworm is still edible, but it won't engage your reptile the same way a vigorous one will.
Color Changes and Darkening. Some hornworms may show color intensification or slight darkening as they approach the end of their usable window, particularly if they're entering pre-pupation. This is a visual signal that these individuals are past their ideal feeding size.
What Not to Do
Don't Store at Room Temperature. Room temperature, typically 68–72°F, is far too warm for hornworm storage. At this temperature, growth accelerates to the point where hornworms can double in size within a week. You'll end up with oversized hornworms unsuitable for most feeding applications and a cup full of mold and bacterial growth.
Don't Freeze Them. Freezing kills hornworms. While frozen hornworms might technically be offered as food, they lose the nutritional value of live feeding and provide no feeding-response trigger for a living reptile. Live feeding is the whole point of using hornworms.
Don't Store with Moisture Accumulation. The container in which your hornworms arrive should have ventilation holes. Do not seal the container with plastic wrap or airtight lids—this traps moisture, promotes mold growth, and can suffocate the animals. Keep the container as-is or transfer to a container with similar ventilation if needed.
Extending Your Window: Buy Only What You'll Use
The most practical storage advice is the simplest: order hornworms in quantities that you'll use within your 1–2 week window.
