How to Slow Down Hornworm Growth Before Feeding Them Out
Why Hornworm Growth Matters
Hornworms arrive at your door as active, feeding caterpillars. From that moment forward, they're on a biological timeline. They eat, they grow, they molt through developmental stages called instars, and eventually they pupate. How fast that clock ticks depends almost entirely on temperature.
When you first receive a cup of hornworms, they might be at the same instar across most of the batch—let's say 4th or 5th instar, the size range commonly sold as feeders. But if they're sitting at room temperature in your warm keeper space, development doesn't pause. Within 4–7 days, they're molting into their final instar, becoming visibly larger and changing their behavior. A few more days and pupation begins—the caterpillar seeks a corner of the container, stops feeding, and starts the metamorphosis into a moth pupa.
A pupating hornworm is no longer a useful feeder. It's hard, unappetizing, and no longer triggers the predatory response that makes hornworms such an effective appetite-stimulation tool. Even before pupation, as they approach it, hornworms lose their vigor and activity. This is why your 1–2 week window exists: it's the gap between arrival and the point where too many in the batch have begun pupation or lost condition.
The solution is temperature management. Cool the hornworms down, and you slow everything.
The 50–55°F Standard
The magic range for hornworm storage is 50–55°F. At this temperature, metabolic processes slow. Feeding slows. Growth slows. Molting slows. Development doesn't stop entirely, but it pauses enough that a cup of hornworms can remain in good feeding condition for the full two weeks or even slightly beyond.
This isn't hibernation. The hornworms don't become dormant. They're still alive, still slightly active, still able to eat if food is provided. But their growth curve—the rate at which they move through instars and toward pupation—is dramatically reduced. Think of it as biological clock-stretching.
You can achieve this range with several methods. A refrigerator (typically 40–45°F) is actually slightly cooler than ideal, but it works if that's your only option. The gap between fridge temperature and the 50–55°F sweet spot is small. Hornworms stored in a refrigerator will still extend their usable window compared to room temperature, though they may slow slightly more than you'd prefer.
A wine cooler, if you have one, is excellent—many can be set to precisely 55°F. A temperature-controlled cooler (small electric cooler with a thermostat dial) works well and gives you more control than a standard refrigerator. Some keepers use a cool basement shelf, garage corner in winter, or a closet in an air-conditioned room that stays naturally in the 50–55°F range.
What Happens at Different Temperatures
The temperature sensitivity of hornworm development is steep. Small changes yield large practical differences:
50–55°F (ideal storage): Development slows significantly. Hornworms remain in stable feeding condition for the full 1–2 weeks and beyond if needed. Activity and appetite are maintained at a sustainable level.
60–65°F (cool room): Development is slower than room temperature but noticeably faster than true cool storage. You might get 10–14 days of good condition, but not consistently to day 14.
68–72°F (typical room temperature): Development accelerates. Molting happens faster. Pupation begins around day 7–10. You have roughly a week of peak feeding condition before the batch starts declining.
75°F and above (warm conditions): Development is rapid. Pupation can begin by day 4–7. This range is essentially unsuitable for storage. Hornworms in a warm room or on a heat tape will mature and pupate before you can use the batch.
If you notice your hornworms pupating after just a few days, temperature is almost certainly the culprit. They're warmer than you think they are, or they're sitting on or near a heat source.
Practical Setup Methods
Refrigerator storage: Place the cup of hornworms in the main refrigerator compartment. It's simple and requires no special equipment. Check on them every couple of days to ensure the chow isn't drying out and to remove any frass (feces) and deceased hornworms. The main downside is that a fridge is 40–45°F, slightly colder than ideal, but this is a minor concern—they'll still extend storage significantly.
Wine cooler or beverage cooler: If you have access to one, these are excellent because many can be dialed to 50–55°F precisely. Just place the hornworm cup inside. The stable temperature gives you consistent results.
Temperature-controlled cooler: A small electric cooler with a thermostat (the kind often used for miniature champagne bottles or skincare products) can be found at reasonable prices online. Set it to 55°F, place the hornworm cup inside, and you have reliable storage. This is an investment but worth it if you're using hornworms regularly.
Natural cool spot: An unheated basement, garage in cold months, or a naturally cool closet (away from heat sources) might hover in the 50–60°F range. Monitor with a simple thermometer to confirm. This is free if you have access to such a space, but temperature stability might be less reliable.
Maintenance During Cool Storage
Even in cool storage, hornworms need minimal care. Check the cup every few days. Remove any dead hornworms (they'll decompose and foul the chow). Remove accumulated frass if it's excessive—it can compact and reduce air circulation.
Ensure the chow isn't drying out. If it looks dry at the surface, lightly mist it with a spray bottle. Hornworms need moisture; dried-out chow degrades their health.
Don't open the container excessively. Each time you open it, you expose the hornworms to warmer ambient air, which slightly counters your cooling effort. A quick check every other day is fine; constant handling defeats the purpose.
Watch for mold. In cool, humid conditions, mold can grow on the chow. This is rare if the container has minimal condensation, but if you see any fuzzy growth, it's worth removing affected chow and improving air circulation slightly.
When to Warm Them Up
You can store hornworms cool to extend shelf life, but when it's time to feed them out, bring them to room temperature an hour or two before feeding. At cooler temperatures, they're less active and less likely to trigger that strong predatory response. The bright color and vigorous wriggling that makes hornworms so effective is maximized when they're at normal temperature.
Remove them from storage, let them sit in their cup at room temperature for an hour, and by the time you present them to your animal, they'll be back at peak activity and appeal.

Temperature is the primary control lever for hornworm shelf life. The 50–55°F range is the target. Cool storage doesn't harm hornworms—it simply slows their natural development to a manageable pace, giving you the full two-week window and sometimes a bit beyond.
If you're receiving hornworms but your animal isn't ready to feed yet, or if you want to make a batch last longer, temperature management is your tool. It's a simple biological reality: cool caterpillars develop slowly. Use that to your advantage.
