Dwarf White vs Dairy Cow Isopods: Which Should You Buy?

By Matt Goren2 min read

Dwarf White or Dairy Cow Isopods?

These two are at opposite ends of the isopod range, so the choice is unusually clear. Dwarf whites are a quiet micro cleanup crew. Dairy cows are large, hungry, and as much a feeder animal as a janitor.

Where Dwarf Whites Win

Dwarf whites are four times smaller and stay out of sight, working through the substrate rather than across the glass. In a humid, planted enclosure with small or delicate animals, that invisibility is exactly what you want.

Being parthenogenetic — all female, reproducing without males — they are also the harder culture to kill. There is no sexing to get wrong and no risk of buying a group that cannot breed.

Where Dairy Cows Win

Dairy cows reach about two centimetres, which is four times the length of a dwarf white and a great deal more animal by weight. That matters in two places. In a large enclosure they shift waste at a rate no dwarf species can match. And they are big enough to feed out — a use dwarf whites are simply too small for.

They also tolerate a drier setup than most isopods, which makes them a better fit for an enclosure you are not keeping at rainforest humidity.

The Catch With Dairy Cows

They are protein-hungry in a way the other species are not, and want a small protein source weekly. Skip it and a hungry colony will go looking for protein elsewhere. Feed them properly and this is a non-issue — but it is a standing job, not a set-and-forget culture.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Small, humid, planted, delicate inhabitants → dwarf whites.
  • Large enclosure, drier setup, or you want feeders as well as cleaners → dairy cows.
  • A big bioactive build → dairy cows for bulk waste, dwarf whites underneath for the fine work.
