BSFL for Ducks, Turkeys, and Other Poultry

If you keep ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl, quail, or any other poultry alongside your backyard chickens, you already know that all poultry species go wild for live grubs. Black soldier fly larvae are the premium version — delivering the highest calcium and protein of any common insect treat.

BSFL Nutrition for Poultry

Nutrient BSFL Why It Matters
Calcium 9,340 mg/kg Strong egg shells in all laying poultry
Protein ~17% Feather growth, egg production, molting support
Fat ~14% Energy for laying hens and active ducks

Species-Specific Tips

Ducks

Ducks are enthusiastic BSFL eaters. Scatter on the ground near their water source — ducks often dip food in water before swallowing, and BSFL are no exception. Muscovy ducks, Pekins, Runners, and Khaki Campbells all accept BSFL eagerly. Laying ducks benefit especially from the calcium for strong egg shells.

Turkeys

Turkeys are natural insect foragers and consume BSFL with gusto. Heritage breeds and broad-breasted varieties alike benefit from the protein boost, especially during their extended growing period.

Quail and Guinea Fowl

Smaller poultry species eat BSFL readily. For coturnix quail, BSFL are a proportionally larger treat — offer fewer per bird (5-10 per quail vs handfuls for chickens/ducks).

How Much to Feed

  • Ducks: Handful per bird per day (similar to chickens)
  • Turkeys: Larger handful — turkeys eat more than chickens
  • Quail: 5-10 BSFL per bird per day
  • Guinea fowl: Handful per bird per day

Keep BSFL to 10-15% of total daily feed. The rest should come from species-appropriate poultry feed.

Storage

Refrigerate at 50-55°F for 2-3 weeks. Dried BSFL store at room temperature for months — convenient for poultry keepers who want maximum shelf life.
