Florida's warm climate does provide a real advantage for discoid breeding compared to northern states. During late spring through early fall—roughly May through October—ambient indoor temperatures in Florida regularly reach 75-82°F without active air conditioning. That's above the minimum breeding threshold and can support modest reproductive activity without supplemental heating. It's a window that doesn't exist for most of the United States.
However, "can support modest activity" isn't the same as "optimal breeding." The difference between ambient 78°F (possible on a hot Florida day) and a maintained 85°F is the difference between breeding and breeding efficiently. You can reproduce at ambient temperature, but don't expect the output you'd get with proper heat control.
Why Florida-Bred Colonies Still Slow Down in Winter
The misconception is that Florida homes stay warm year-round indoors. They don't. Most households use air conditioning aggressively to combat heat, especially in summer. In winter (December-February), even in Florida, indoor temperatures often drop to the low 70s or mid-60s, particularly if the house is unoccupied during the day. At 70°F, discoid breeding slows dramatically. At 65°F or below, it essentially stops.

Winter lows aren't arctic, but they're cool enough that ambient indoor temperature becomes a limiting factor without active climate control. If you're an individual keeper with one colony for your own reptiles, ambient-only breeding in Florida is manageable. You produce roaches seasonally, your reptile demands shift with the season anyway, and you accept that winter breeding is minimal. That's realistic and workable.
If you're trying to run a consistent breeding operation—supplying roaches year-round, maintaining multiple colonies, scaling production—ambient temperature alone will frustrate you. Seasonal bottlenecks mean months of stalled colonies taking up space without output. Margins disappear. You can't reliably commit to delivery schedules if winter cuts your production in half.
The Modest Cost of Supplemental Heating Changes the Equation
A simple thermostat-controlled heat mat (20-25 watts) and temperature controller costs under $50 to set up. The ongoing electricity cost is negligible—far less than what ambient air conditioning costs you anyway. For that modest one-time investment, you convert a seasonal breeding operation into a year-round one and roughly double your annual output.
Most serious breeders find that investment obvious and immediate. Even Florida breeders who could theoretically breed on ambient conditions choose not to, because supplemental heat is cheap and the reliability gain is enormous.
If You Choose Ambient-Only, Here Is What Works
Accept that your colony will pulse seasonally. In warm months (May-October), optimize temperature by placing the enclosure in the warmest, most stable part of your home—not in air-conditioned main rooms but in a consistent-temperature closet or garage. Avoid temperature swings. Maintain good nutrition and population balance during the breeding season so the colony builds during its productive window.
Plan your breeding around the seasons: aim to harvest and feed your reptiles during the high-production months, and anticipate lower supply in winter. Start your colony in late spring so it has the full warm season to establish before temperatures drop. Keep backup backup frozen roaches or consider purchase from a supplier during winter when your breeding stalls.
Most importantly, track your colony's actual output over months. If you're getting what you need during the productive season and have a plan for winter shortages, ambient-only breeding can work for your specific situation. But be honest with yourself about what "works" actually means—it's not consistent year-round production.
The Practical Reality for Most Florida Breeders

The climate advantage matters, but it doesn't eliminate the need for control. If anything, Florida breeders know more acutely than northern keepers how much seasonality matters, because they see it happen every year despite living in a warm state.
