Myth: Discoid Roaches Breed Like Dubia Roaches
This is one of the most pervasive misconceptions among keepers new to discoids. The two species are often grouped in the same conversation—both are feeder insects, both fare well in similar setups—but their reproductive strategies are fundamentally different. Dubia roaches are prolific breeders that produce numerous nymphs relatively quickly once established. Discoids are slower, more deliberate reproducers.
If you expect a discoid colony to behave like a dubia colony, you'll be disappointed. Discoids require more time between generations, produce fewer nymphs per ootheca, and demand more stable conditions to reproduce consistently. That's not a flaw; it's just biology. Expect a discoid colony to build momentum over months, not weeks. Many breeders who switched from dubias to discoids initially thought their new colony was failing when it was simply following its natural pace.
Myth: Any Warmth Is Good Enough for Breeding
A related assumption: "They're warm-blooded insects in my room—warmth helps, so a little extra heat will do." That's backwards on the first point (they're cold-blooded) and undershooting on the second. A colony at 70°F with a heat lamp in the corner isn't reliably breeding just because it's somewhat warmer than room temperature. Inconsistent or marginal heat actually makes breeding worse than no heat at all, because the colony begins cycling but never has the sustained conditions to complete those cycles.
Breeding requires sustained, stable warmth, not occasional heat spikes. A constant 82-88°F beats 75°F with a heat lamp turned on three times a week. If you're going to heat the colony, commit to consistent temperature maintenance. If you can't, accept that breeding will be sporadic and seasonal rather than reliable.
Myth: Overcrowding the Colony Speeds Up Breeding
Some breeders reason that more roaches packed into a space means more reproduction happening in parallel, so the colony grows faster overall. In practice, overcrowding does the opposite. High population density triggers stress responses: roaches become more cannibalistic, oothecae are eaten before or shortly after being laid, nymph survival plummets, and colonies become prone to sudden crashes.
A moderately-populated, calm colony with room to move consistently outproduces a densely packed colony in chaos. Overcrowding is one of the fastest ways to derail a breeding project. The irony is that the breeders most desperate for rapid growth often create the conditions that guarantee the slowest.
Myth: All Males in the Enclosure Means Faster Breeding
The logic seems sound: more males competing means more females get mated, right? In reality, all-male or heavily male-skewed colonies create constant aggression and stress. Males pursue females relentlessly when they significantly outnumber them, preventing females from settling, feeding properly, or developing eggs undisturbed. The result is fewer oothecae, not more. Females under constant male pressure often don't produce at all.
The productive setup is a balanced sex ratio with enough females that no individual is under constant attention. This lets females establish territories, feed, and reproduce on their natural schedule. A 1:1 or 1:1.5 male-to-female ratio typically works better than male-heavy colonies.
Myth: Discoids Need Massive Enclosures for Breeding
You don't need a 40-gallon breeder setup to run a productive discoid colony. A 10-gallon aquarium or similar-sized plastic bin works fine if conditions are maintained properly. The determining factors for breeding success are temperature, humidity, food quality, and not overcrowding—not enclosure size itself. Many established breeders run multiple successful colonies in modest containers.
Larger enclosures have a practical advantage: they buffer temperature and humidity more effectively and give you easier access for maintenance. But they're not a requirement for breeding to happen. What matters is the microclimate inside the container and how well you manage the population within it.
Myth: If They Look Healthy, They're Definitely Breeding
A roach can look robust—glossy carapace, active behavior, good appetite—and still not be reproducing. Visual health and reproductive output aren't the same thing. Temperature can be marginal but not lethal; males and females might not be mating successfully; or the colony might be mostly juveniles that haven't reached sexual maturity yet. A "healthy-looking" colony isn't the same as a "breeding" colony. Many keepers operate for months thinking their colony is fine when it's actually silently stalled.
If you're trying to breed, look for concrete evidence: oothecae actually appearing, nymphs hatching, generational overlap visible in the colony. "Looks good" isn't enough. Verify it with output.
