Best Feeder Insects for Reptiles: Complete Ranking (2026)

There are dozens of feeder insects available — but most reptile keepers only need four or five to build a nutritionally complete diet. The key is understanding what each feeder does well and where it falls short, then building a rotation that covers all nutritional bases: protein, calcium, low-fat nutrition, and hydration.

This ranking evaluates every common feeder insect on six criteria: protein, fat, calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, safety (bite/impaction risk), versatility (how many species it works for), and practicality (shelf life, maintenance, availability).

The Definitive Ranking

Rank Feeder Best For Score
#1 Discoid Roaches Daily protein staple for all insectivores 10/10
#2 BSFL Calcium supplement for all species 9.5/10
#3 Silkworms Low-fat nutrition, chameleons, juveniles 9/10
#4 Hornworms Hydration, appetite stimulation 8/10
#5 Dubia Roaches Protein staple (where legal) 7.5/10
#6 Crickets Budget protein (with significant downsides) 5/10
#7 Mealworms Convenience backup for adults only 4/10
#8 Superworms Large species treat only 3/10
#9 Waxworms Sick/underweight recovery only 2/10

Master Nutrition Table

Feeder Protein Fat Ca:P Ca (mg/kg) Moisture
Discoid Roaches 20% 7% 0.77:1 800 61%
BSFL 17% 14% 1.52:1 9,340 61%
Silkworms 13% 1% 0.8:1 177 83%
Hornworms 9% 3% 3:1 464 85%
Crickets 18% 6% 0.13:1 345 73%
Mealworms 20% 13% 0.04:1 133 62%
Superworms 20% 18% 0.06:1 124 58%
Waxworms 16% 25% 0.08:1 243 58%

#1: Discoid Roaches — The Best All-Around Feeder

Discoid roaches earn the top spot because no other feeder scores as consistently high across all criteria. Highest protein (20%), moderate fat (7%), best Ca:P among protein feeders (0.77:1), fully gut-loadable, no bite risk, no smell, no noise, no escape risk, legal in all 50 states including Florida, and 6-12 month shelf life. If you could only feed one insect, this is it.

#2: BSFL — The Calcium Revolution

BSFL changed reptile nutrition. Before BSFL became widely available, every feeder insect had a negative Ca:P ratio — meaning every feeding depleted calcium unless externally dusted. BSFL deliver 9,340 mg/kg calcium naturally with a positive 1.52:1 Ca:P ratio. No dusting needed. They are the single most effective MBD prevention tool available.

#3: Silkworms — The Premium Low-Fat Feeder

Silkworms at 1% fat fill a niche no other feeder can: ultra-low-fat nutrition for species that cannot tolerate dietary fat. Chameleons, which develop gout and fatty liver on high-fat diets, thrive on silkworms. Their soft, chitin-free body is safe for the smallest juveniles. The serrapeptase enzyme is a unique nutritional bonus.

#4: Hornworms — The Hydration Feeder

Hornworms at 85% moisture are edible water. For chameleons that are difficult to hydrate through misting, for bearded dragons that ignore water dishes, and for any reptile showing dehydration signs — hornworms deliver guaranteed hydration per feeding. Their 3:1 Ca:P ratio is a bonus.

#5: Dubia Roaches

Dubia roaches are nutritionally comparable to discoid roaches but rank lower because they are illegal in Florida — the largest reptile market in the United States. Discoid roaches are legal everywhere and nutritionally equivalent.

#6-9: The Bottom Tier

Crickets, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms each have specific narrow use cases but should not be dietary staples for any species. Their nutritional profiles (poor Ca:P ratios, high fat, bite risk, or addictive properties) make them inferior to the top four in virtually every application.

The Universal Feeder Rotation

These four feeders cover every nutritional need for any insectivorous reptile:

  1. Discoid Roaches — Protein backbone (3-5x/week)
  2. BSFL — Calcium supplement (1-2x/week)
  3. Silkworms — Low-fat variety (1-2x/week)
  4. Hornworms — Hydration (1x/week)

Adjust quantities and frequency for your specific species, but this four-feeder rotation is the foundation of optimal reptile nutrition.
