Why Silk Cocoons Are Different Shapes
Shape Is Inherited, and It Is a Behaviour
Silkworm strains produce cocoons that are oval, peanut-shaped or spindle-shaped, and which shape you get is genetic. That is stranger than it sounds, because a cocoon is not a body part. It is a structure the animal builds.
Cocoon shape is a construction trait, determined by spinning behaviour — so what is inherited is not a form but a pattern of movement. Gene mapping and editing work has since identified regulators of both cocoon shape and the spinning behaviour that produces it.
Chinese Oval, Japanese Dumbbell
The regional lines are distinct enough to be shorthand in the industry. Chinese parental lines spin oval cocoons; Japanese lines spin dumbbell-shaped ones.
Commercial silkworms are usually single-cross hybrids made by crossing the two — which is done for vigour rather than for shape, but the shape comes along with it.
Why Cross At All
Heterosis, or hybrid vigour: the F1 generation of two distinct pure lines outperforms both parents. In sericulture that shows up in growth rate, cocoon weight, shell weight and disease resistance — the traits that decide whether a farm makes money.
The pure lines are maintained not because anyone rears them commercially but because you cannot make the hybrid without them.
What Gets Measured
Cocoon quality in breeding programmes is not one number. It is a list: fecundity, larval duration, pupation percentage, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell percentage, raw silk percentage, filament length, reelability, denier and neatness.
"Neatness" and "reelability" are worth pausing on — they describe how cleanly the filament unwinds. A heavy cocoon that reels badly is worth less than a lighter one that runs smoothly, which is why weight alone was never the target.
