The Silkworm Gut Microbiome: Why Chow-Fed Worms Differ
Diet Changes the Bacteria, and the Bacteria Change the Animal
Silkworms reared on artificial diet carry a measurably less diverse gut microbiome than those fed fresh mulberry — and they grow less well. That link is now one of the more active questions in sericulture research, because it explains part of the silk-yield gap between chow and leaf.
What Lives in There
The dominant bacterial groups found in silkworm intestines are Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria. The diversity, the community structure, and the predicted functions of that community are all significantly influenced by what the animal is fed.
The Cost of Chow
Artificial-diet-reared silkworms show reduced gut microbial diversity and impaired growth against mulberry-fed animals. Cheap formulations can produce dietary stress, delayed development and reduced silk quality — and the microbiome appears to be part of the mechanism rather than a side effect.
Specific Bacteria Doing Specific Jobs
This is where it stops being a general story about diversity. Enterococcus casseliflavus, a gut symbiont isolated from mulberry-reared silkworms, was found to promote host growth by helping produce L-tryptophan — an essential amino acid. A bacterium is contributing a nutrient the animal needs.
Others matter for transitions: Lactobacillus and Weissella appear to help worms adapt when moved between diets, which is exactly the moment a keeper is most likely to lose a batch.
Where It Is Heading
The obvious next step is being taken: identifying which bacteria matter and putting them into the artificial diet formulation. Work on probiotics — Bacillus subtilis among them — reports improved growth and silk production by modulating the gut community and amino acid metabolism.
What a Keeper Takes From This
Two things. Switching a batch abruptly between chow and leaf is a real stress, not just a preference change — the gut community has to shift with it. And a cup of worms doing poorly on a cheap diet may be short of bacteria rather than short of nutrients.
