The Single-Tote Hobbyist Approach
The smallest viable setup for a personal feeder colony is one 20-gallon plastic storage tote with a colony of 20-30 founder roaches. Total cost: tote ($15-20), heating tape if needed ($20-30), substrate and food ($10-15), and the roaches themselves ($30-50). Total startup is roughly $100. The footprint is a single shelf under your bed, in a closet, or on a cabinet. Maintenance is maybe 30 minutes a week: check moisture, refill water, add fresh food, spot-clean waste.
A single tote at steady state produces 50-100 harvestable roaches every two to three weeks, assuming healthy breeding. That's perfect for feeding two or three small reptiles continuously, or for sporadic feeding of one larger animal. Population maxes out around 400-600 roaches of all sizes before space becomes a limiting factor. At that point, you're harvesting regularly just to keep the colony from overcrowding.
The downsides: you have very little margin for error. One failed harvest window and your colony starts crashing. A temperature fluctuation (say, your heating tape dies in winter) impacts the whole population immediately. Breeding is seasonal if you don't control temperature precisely. You can't selectively breed effectively with only one population. And if disease hits, you lose everything.
The Multi-Bin Rack System
A commercial or semi-commercial setup uses a rack frame (metal shelving or PVC) with four to eight 40-gallon totes stacked vertically, each with its own colony. Cost goes up significantly: a sturdy metal rack is $100-200, each larger tote is $20-30, heating system for the whole rack (thermostat-controlled heat tape or a space heater in an insulated cabinet) is $50-150, and supplies are doubled or tripled. Total startup for a four-bin rack is roughly $400-600.
At scale, you're managing four independent colonies, each producing its own harvest on a staggered schedule. If each bin reaches steady state, you're harvesting 150-250 roaches weekly — enough to supply 10-20 reptiles, or to sell surplus to other keepers. A four-bin system can produce a thousand roaches a month if population is stable.
The labor shifts: instead of 30 minutes weekly on one colony, you're spending 90 minutes to two hours weekly maintaining four colonies. It scales, but it's no longer a "set it and forget it" hobby. You're monitoring temperature across the whole rack (one thermostat controls all bins), adjusting heating, managing four separate feeding schedules, and tracking which bin is due for harvest. Organization becomes critical.
Space Requirements and Footprint
A single-tote setup takes up roughly two feet by one foot of shelf space (or less if you nestle the tote in a closet corner). It integrates into existing home space easily. A four-bin rack occupies roughly four feet by two feet of floor or shelf space, plus height for the stack. You need ventilation so heat doesn't build up, so it can't be in a sealed closet. Most people use a garage corner, a basement shelf, or a dedicated room. Some keep it in a large closet with the door cracked for air circulation.
If you're a serious breeder or thinking about selling roaches, eight-bin racks aren't uncommon, and those require dedicated space — a shelf unit ten feet long by three feet deep. At that scale, you're looking at climate-controlled storage, not a hobby hobby corner.
Cost Per Roach and Scaling Efficiency
A single tote produces 200-300 roaches per month at steady state. Your startup cost per roach at equilibrium is roughly $0.30-0.50 per roach once the colony is mature (amortizing container and equipment over two years of breeding). Feeding costs are minimal — a pound of cricket food, some vegetable scraps, and water. Labor is cheap because it's mostly just feeding and moisture checks.
A four-bin rack at full capacity produces 1,000-1,200 roaches monthly. Startup cost per roach drops to $0.20-0.30 because equipment costs are spread across a larger output. But labor becomes a real input — your two hours per week at minimum wage is roughly $20 per week, or about $1,000 per year. That changes the unit economics if you're thinking about this commercially.
At commercial scale (12+ bins), the cost per roach can drop further, but then you need environmental controls (humidifiers, thermostats, possibly cooling), more sophisticated record-keeping, and possibly licensing depending on whether you're selling feeders. It transitions from hobby to small business.
Disease and Loss Risk
The biggest practical advantage of multi-bin systems: redundancy. If one tote gets contaminated with mold or a disease pathogen, you lose one colony but keep three others. A hobbyist with one tote loses everything. Some breeders deliberately keep one bin slightly isolated as a backup starter colony, so if the main bins crash, they can quickly reboot from survivors.
For a single tote, disease risk is serious enough to warrant excellent sanitation: weekly cleaning, keeping the substrate from getting waterlogged, and ensuring no mold growth. It's doable, but there's no forgiveness if you slip up.
Breeding Strategy Differences
With one tote, your breeding strategy is simple: maintain a healthy population and harvest regularly. You can't selectively breed effectively because you have no way to separate bloodlines or control which males breed with which females.
With a multi-bin rack, you can pursue sophisticated breeding strategies. Keep your best-looking adult stock in Bin 1 (your breeding reserve). Use Bins 2 and 3 for production (regular feeding and harvesting). Keep Bin 4 as a backup or for breeding experiments (trying to select for size, vigor, etc.). This separation lets you optimize breeding independently from your feeder supply, which is how serious breeders improve stock quality.
Scaling Decisions: When to Upgrade
Start with one tote if you're new to roach breeding. You'll learn the rhythm of the colony, understand how much food they actually need, and figure out your personal comfort level with roach management. If one tote is meeting your feeding needs consistently after three months, you know the model works for you. If you're constantly running short on feeders or your colony is overcrowded, upgrading to a second tote or a small rack makes sense.
Most hobbyists max out at two totes. They're feeding three or four reptiles and don't want more than an hour per week on maintenance. That two-tote setup lives under a bed or in a closet forever. Breeders who want to scale to selling roaches make the jump to a four or six-bin rack, which is where the workflow becomes genuinely efficient. Anything bigger requires space, climate control, and serious commitment.
Which Setup Is Right for You
Choose a single 20-gallon tote if you're feeding one or two animals, you're space-constrained, or you're trying discoid roaches for the first time. It's low-commitment, low-cost, and low-risk. If your colony thrives and you find you're always harvesting, you'll know to expand.
Choose a multi-bin rack if you're feeding more than four reptiles, you want to scale toward selling roaches, or you value the insurance of redundancy. A four-bin setup is the sweet spot for semi-serious breeders — productive enough to feel worthwhile, but not so large that it dominates your space or time.
