Silkworms vs Dubia Roaches: Which Feeder Is Better?

Silkworms vs Dubia Roaches: Supplement vs Staple

Silkworms and dubia roaches (or their legal equivalent, discoid roaches) are both premium feeder insects — but they serve fundamentally different roles. Roaches are the daily protein staple. Silkworms are the premium low-fat supplement. Understanding this distinction means using each feeder for what it does best.

Category Silkworms Discoid/Dubia Roaches
Primary role Low-fat supplement Daily protein staple
Protein 9% 20-23%
Fat 1% 7%
Moisture 83% 65%
Chitin None Moderate
Gut-loadable? No (eats only mulberry) Excellent
Shelf life 1-2 weeks (needs food) Weeks-months (minimal care)
Serrapeptase Yes No

Not an Either/Or Decision

This comparison is not about choosing one over the other — it is about understanding that they serve different functions in the same feeding rotation. Roaches provide the protein foundation that fuels daily activity and growth. Silkworms provide the low-fat premium supplement that prevents obesity, supports hydration, and delivers the unique serrapeptase enzyme.

A reptile eating only roaches misses the ultra-low-fat nutrition and serrapeptase that silkworms provide. A reptile eating only silkworms gets insufficient protein for muscle growth and maintenance. Together, they complement each other perfectly.

The Complete Rotation

  • Daily: Discoid roaches (protein — 20%, gut-loaded, calcium-dusted)
  • 2-3x/week: Silkworms (1% fat, 83% moisture, serrapeptase, zero chitin)
  • 1-2x/week: BSFL (9,340 mg/kg calcium — no dusting)
  • 1-2x/week: Hornworms (85% moisture, 3:1 calcium, appetite stimulation)

Note: Dubia roaches are banned in Florida. Discoid roaches are the legal equivalent with nearly identical nutrition — legal in all 50 states.
