Quarantining New Discoid Roaches Before Adding to Your Colony
New roaches are a tempting shortcut: a few females added to an existing colony can jumpstart breeding or introduce fresh genetics. But skipping quarantine is a gamble. A supplier's colony might harbor mites, mold, or other roaches that weren't part of the original shipment. One bad roach can infect an established, healthy colony. Quarantine is boring but essential.
Why Quarantine Matters
Even All Angles Creatures, a reputable supplier, ships roaches that have been in transport. Stress from shipping, combined with exposure to whatever environment the roaches came from, means new arrivals carry invisible risk. They might be fine—probably they are—but the rare bad shipment can wipe out months of colony building.
The risks include mites (especially grain mites), mold spores on the roaches' exoskeletons, or roaches carrying parasites that don't show symptoms until they're in your colony at scale. There's also the small chance of a mixed species—a Dubia or Turkestan roach accidentally packed with discoids that could establish an unwanted colony if not caught immediately.
Quarantine isolates new roaches so problems declare themselves without infecting your main colony.
The Quarantine Setup
You need a small, separate container—a 5–10 quart plastic bin is perfect. It doesn't need to be fancy, but it needs the basics:
Heat and humidity: Same temperature and humidity as your main colony (78–84°F, 60–75% humidity). Use a heat mat on a thermostat, just like the main colony. New roaches need stability; fluctuating conditions are added stress.
Substrate: Paper towel or minimal coco fiber. You want easy visibility and quick cleaning. Avoid complex setups where problems might hide.
Hide boxes: Roaches need somewhere to shelter. A cut toilet paper roll or a small piece of bark works. Don't use elaborate hides—you need to see the roaches regularly.
Food and water: Provide basic provisions—a small dish of vegetables, dried cricket chow, and a water source. The roaches should eat normally if they're healthy.
What to Watch For
Mites: Inspect the bin daily. Look for a fine, dusty coating on food or substrate, or visible small moving specks. Healthy roaches will be grooming themselves normally. If you see roaches becoming lethargic or stops eating while mites proliferate, that's a sign grain mites have established.
Mold: Check substrate and hide boxes for white or green mold blooms. Healthy discoids tolerate the humidity needed to grow mold, so any mold that appears is contamination, not environmental drift.
Behavioral problems: Roaches should move normally, eat readily, and settle into the hide boxes. If they're hyperactive for more than a day or two (indicating stress beyond shipping), or if they're lethargic without reason, something is wrong.
Obvious disease: Look for roaches with damaged exoskeletons, fungal growths, or unusual lesions. These are rare in reputable suppliers, but they're the most visible sign of a problem. A roach with fungal infection shouldn't mix with your colony under any circumstances.
Species check: Discoid roaches are smaller than Dubias or Turkestans, dark brown, and shaped distinctly. Spend five minutes comparing the new arrivals to reference photos online. You're looking for the wrong species accidentally packed—unlikely but possible.
The Quarantine Timeline
Days 1–3: Roaches are stressed from shipping. They may not eat much. This is normal. Keep them warm, dark, and undisturbed except for brief visual checks.
Days 4–7: Roaches should be settling. Eating should resume. Watch for mites or mold. If nothing has appeared by day 7, the risk is low.
Days 8–14: Extended observation. Mites can take up to two weeks to reach visible levels if present. Mold, similarly, may take time to bloom. If all is well at day 14, the roaches are safe to introduce.
Day 15+: If no problems have appeared by day 15, you can confidently merge the quarantine bin with the main colony. Problems almost always declare themselves within two weeks.
Merging Into the Main Colony
Once quarantine is complete, merging is straightforward. Transfer the roaches from the quarantine bin into the main colony bin. They'll integrate immediately—roaches recognize each other by pheromones and don't fight over territory like many insects.
Tip: Do the transfer during the day when roaches are less active. It's easier to catch them and there's less chance of escapees during the move.
Don't combine everything at once. Transfer only the roaches, not the substrate or hide boxes from the quarantine bin. The substrate might carry mites or mold spores that didn't show symptoms yet. Fresh transfer = cleaner integration.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Mites detected: Don't merge. Instead, treat the quarantine bin (see the mold and mite prevention guide for treatment protocols). After treatment, restart the quarantine observation for another week. Or, if the infestation is severe, discard the batch and request a replacement from the supplier.
Mold detected: Do a full substrate change, increase ventilation, and restart observation. Mold alone isn't a reason to discard healthy roaches—it's a sign of environmental adjustment during shipping. If mold clears up with a fresh substrate, the roaches are fine.
Roaches won't eat or look sick: Wait it out. Shipping stress can suppress appetite for days. If lethargy or failure to eat persists beyond a week, then quarantine has done its job: you're protecting the main colony by keeping sick roaches isolated.
Quarantine for Breeding Stock
If you're buying new roaches specifically to breed (new females, new genetics), quarantine is even more important. These roaches are going to propagate through your entire colony. Any mite or mold they carry will multiply through every offspring. Spend the extra two weeks. Patience now saves headaches later.
The Boring But Essential Habit
Quarantine doesn't require much—just a separate bin, daily observation, and 14 days of patience. No advanced setup, no complex monitoring. The boring approach is the one that works. New roaches merged directly into established colonies cause problems just often enough that quarantine is worth doing every time. It's insurance against preventable disaster.
