The Cleaning Schedule Solves Most Colony Problems

A lot of colony problems—mold, ammonia buildup, sluggish reproduction, unexpected die-offs—trace back to one root cause: inadequate cleaning. It's not flashy work, and it's easy to skip when the roaches seem fine. But consistency here is what separates keepers running resilient, productive colonies from those fighting constant problems. The good news is that a proper cleaning routine isn't complicated or time-intensive. It's just specific tasks done at specific intervals, scaled to your colony size.

Twice-Weekly Frass Removal

Roaches produce frass (droppings) continuously. It accumulates on the substrate and in corners, and as it breaks down, it generates ammonia. This is the single most important habit to establish. Twice per week, spend 5–10 minutes removing visible frass piles. Use a small scoop or tweezers, and pull out the dark, compacted sections. Don't wait until it's a thick layer; catching it early keeps the air quality stable and ammonia from spiking.

In a small colony (50–100 roaches), frass accumulation is slow and manageable. You might get by with once-weekly removal, but twice is safer and takes barely any time. In a large colony (500+ roaches), frass accumulates faster. You may find yourself scooping three times weekly or more, especially during warm months when metabolism is higher. The rule of thumb: if the substrate is starting to look dark and compacted before your next scheduled cleaning, you're not cleaning frequently enough.

Produce Rotation and Uneaten Food Removal

Feed roaches vegetable scraps, squash, leafy greens, or high-water content items. The trick is rotation—remove what's left before it starts to rot or mold. If you put in a piece of squash on Monday, pull out what remains by Wednesday. Don't let uneaten produce sit more than 24–48 hours before removal. Old produce attracts mold, creates anaerobic pockets in the substrate where bacterial blooms can happen, and reduces the enclosure's air quality.

Established colonies can sustain themselves on good substrate—they'll actually eat bits of it—but roaches fed fresh produce reproduce faster, grow larger, and have better nutrition to pass to your feeding reptile. The trick is the balance: enough to improve their condition, but not so much that you're constantly fishing out rotted bits. A small piece of carrot, a slice of squash, or a handful of dark leafy greens once or twice weekly is a good baseline. Adjust based on what your colony actually eats and how quickly.

Weekly Substrate Stirring

Discoid roaches burrow and hide. Over time, the substrate gets compacted in some areas while other sections develop anaerobic (oxygen-free) zones where mold and bad bacteria thrive. Once weekly, stir the top 2–3 inches of substrate gently. Use a small rake or your fingers, and break up any hard-packed sections. This does two things: it improves air circulation through the substrate, preventing mold spores from finding still-air pockets to germinate, and it redistributes roach frass throughout the medium rather than letting it concentrate in any one zone.

This is also when you'll spot early signs of mold if you're paying attention. If you see any white or fuzzy growth, that's your signal to increase ventilation and be more aggressive about removing old produce and frass.

Monthly Full Substrate Replacement

No matter how diligent your frass removal and stirring, the substrate eventually accumulates enough ammonia, waste compounds, and fungal spores that it needs to be replaced. Every 4 weeks, change out the entire substrate. This is non-negotiable for a healthy colony.

The process: prepare new substrate (coconut husk, cypress mulch, or a blend are all good options), place the current hide structures aside, and gently scoop the roaches into a temporary container while you work. Remove all old substrate from the enclosure. Wipe down the enclosure walls with a damp cloth (especially the corners and edges where moisture accumulates). Put down the new substrate, arrange hides, return water gels, add a light feeding of produce, and transfer the roaches back.

For a small colony, this takes 15–20 minutes. For a large colony in a big enclosure, budget 30–45 minutes. You'll notice that after a full substrate change, the colony often seems more active and reproductive output improves. That's not coincidence—roaches are more productive in clean environments.

Scaling Cleaning to Colony Size

Small colony (25–100 roaches): Once-weekly frass removal (acceptable, though twice is better), weekly produce check, stirring during weekly maintenance, monthly substrate change.

Medium colony (100–300 roaches): Twice-weekly frass removal, twice-weekly produce rotation, weekly stirring, monthly substrate change.

Large colony (300+ roaches): Three-times-weekly frass removal, daily or every-other-day produce checks, twice-weekly stirring, monthly substrate change (sometimes 2–3 weeks if frass accumulates very fast in summer).

The core tasks are the same at any scale; you're just adjusting frequency based on how fast ammonia and frass accumulate relative to your colony's size and feeding intensity.

The Real Time Commitment

All of this—twice-weekly frass removal, weekly substrate stirring, produce rotation, monthly full substrate change—comes out to roughly 1–2 hours per month for a typical keeper with a single medium colony. It's not burdensome. The keepers who claim colonies are "too much work" are usually the ones skipping these steps, running into problems (mold, die-offs, slow breeding), and then spending far more time fixing crises. Prevention through consistent cleaning is the path to a colony that practically runs itself.

Build the routine into a regular schedule—say, every Tuesday and Friday you remove frass, every other Saturday you stir and do a full substrate visual check, the last Sunday of the month you do the full substrate change. Once it's habit, you'll barely think about it. And your roaches will reward the consistency with the kind of health and productivity that makes them genuinely easy to maintain long-term.
