How Black Soldier Fly Larvae Are Farmed Commercially
A home bin and an industrial facility run the same biology at incomparable scales. Understanding the commercial process explains a lot about what you are buying.
Stage One: The Breeding Colony
Everything starts with adults in a mating enclosure. Black soldier flies need light to mate — historically sunlight, now usually engineered lighting — and getting that lighting right was one of the genuine technical barriers to farming the species indoors at scale.
Adults are given water and something to lay in: they prefer to deposit eggs in dry crevices near a food source rather than in it, so facilities provide corrugated media beside the substrate.
Stage Two: Nursery
Eggs hatch into larvae far too small to handle, which spend their first days on a controlled, consistent starter feed. Uniformity here determines uniformity in the final harvest.
Stage Three: Grow-Out
The main event. Larvae are moved into crates of substrate — the waste stream the facility is built around — at a controlled density, in a temperature and humidity controlled room. This is where the bioconversion happens and where most of the mass is gained.
Stage Four: Separation
Larvae are separated from the remaining frass mechanically at scale, rather than relying on the self-harvesting behaviour a home bin uses. Both products go on.
Stage Five: Processing
What happens next depends on the market:
- Live — graded and shipped, the reptile feeder trade
- Dried — killed and dried whole, for pet and bird food
- Meal — dried, ground, usually defatted, for aquaculture and feed compounding
- Oil — the extracted fat, valued for its lauric acid
Why Any of This Matters to a Buyer
Because it tells you what questions are worth asking. Substrate and size grading are the two variables that determine what lands in your feeder cup, and both are decided in stages three and five. A producer who will tell you what their larvae were raised on is telling you something meaningful.
