Lauric Acid in Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Most feeder insects store fat that is nutritionally unremarkable. Black soldier fly larvae do not, and the difference has a name: lauric acid.
What Lauric Acid Is
Lauric acid is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid. Its most familiar source is coconut oil, where it makes up roughly half the fat. In black soldier fly larvae it is typically the single most abundant fatty acid, commonly reported at around 40–50% of total fatty acids, though the figure moves with what the larvae were raised on.
Why Anyone Cares
Medium-chain fatty acids are metabolised differently from the long-chain fats that dominate most animal tissue — they are absorbed more directly and used more readily as energy rather than stored.
Lauric acid also has documented antimicrobial activity, particularly against gram-positive bacteria. This is the property driving most of the research interest, and it is why BSFL keeps appearing in work on antibiotic alternatives in livestock feed. That research is genuinely promising and genuinely unfinished — it is not a reason to make health claims about a cup of feeders.
The Practical Version
For a keeper, the useful takeaway is narrower and more reliable: the fat profile is part of why BSFL are a better routine feeder than the other fatty options. A waxworm's fat is simply fat. BSFL fat is doing something more interesting, and the animal carries less of it relative to its protein and calcium.
