Hornworm Nymph vs Full-Size: Which Should You Buy?
Understanding the Size Spectrum
Hornworms are sold in two primary size categories, and the distinction matters for your purchasing decision: nymphs (juveniles) and full-size adults. They're not arbitrary designations—they represent different life stages with measurable size, growth rate, and usability windows.
Understanding what these actually mean and how they fit your feeding timeline is essential to making a buying decision that works for you rather than one that results in hornworms growing too large before you use them.
Hornworm Nymphs: The Smaller Option
Hornworm nymphs are juvenile caterpillars in their early growth stages. They typically range from 0.5 to 1.25 inches in length, depending on which instar (molt stage) they're currently in. They're thin-bodied relative to their length and move with energetic wriggling.
Nymphs are appropriate for smaller reptile species and younger animals: juvenile crested geckos (once they reach 3-4 weeks old), smaller leopard geckos, juveniles of medium-sized species, small frogs, and young bearded dragons. The smaller gape requirement and reduced length make nymphs the conservative choice for species or individual reptiles where full-size might be borderline.
Growth rate: Nymphs grow visibly within days. At room temperature (70-75°F), a nymph will advance to the next instar (size class) within 3-5 days. This means a small nymph quickly becomes a medium nymph, and then a large one. If you're not feeding them out rapidly, they'll outgrow your intended size targets.
Storage advantage: Because nymphs are smaller to start, they occupy less space in a refrigerator container. A single cup of nymphs is more compact than a cup of full-size adults, making storage easier in tight spaces.
Full-Size Hornworms: The Larger Option
Full-size hornworms are adults at or near their maximum length—typically 1.5 to 2 inches or slightly larger. They're thick-bodied, substantial prey items that represent a significant meal. They move with the same characteristic wriggling but with more obvious body mass.
Full-size hornworms are appropriate for adult reptiles of medium to large size: adult bearded dragons, adult leopard geckos, adult water dragons, adult crested geckos, White's tree frogs, and comparable species. If your reptile can safely accommodate a 1.5 to 2-inch prey item (which most adult reptiles of these species can), full-size hornworms are efficient feeders—one hornworm constitutes a substantial meal.
Growth rate: Full-size hornworms are near their maximum size, so they grow minimally before pupating. At storage temperature (50-55°F), they might advance slightly before entering pupation, but that process is much slower than nymph growth. You have a longer usability window—perhaps up to two weeks before they pupate or become unsuitable.
Practical reality: Full-size hornworms still molt and pupate within their storage window. As they approach pupation, they stop eating and become darker/darker in coloration. At that point, they're unusable as feeders and should be removed. Plan to use them before that progression occurs.
The Sizing Decision: Your Reptile
Start with your reptile's species and size. Ask: What's the maximum gape size my reptile can safely handle? If it's under 1 inch, stick with nymphs. If it's 1-1.5 inches, you're in the overlap zone where nymphs (on the larger end) or small/medium full-size might work—try one first and monitor. If it's 1.5+ inches, full-size is appropriate.
Here's a practical sizing guide:
Nymphs are better for: Juvenile crested geckos, young leopard geckos (under 4-5 inches), young bearded dragons, small frog species, small skinks, any hatchling or very young reptile approaching the lower end of a species' adult size range.
Full-size are better for: Adult bearded dragons, adult leopard geckos, adult crested geckos, adult water dragons, adult frilled dragons, tokay geckos, medium-to-large skinks, White's tree frogs, and comparable adult-sized species.
The Consumption Timeline Decision
The second decision factor is how fast you plan to feed them out. Hornworms have a 1-2 week usability window before growth and pupation make them unsuitable. Plan to consume them within that window.
If you feed 1-2x weekly: A single cup lasts about 2-4 feedings before the hornworms outgrow your needs or pupate. At that pace, full-size makes sense—each individual can be used in a single feeding, and a cup provides multiple sessions.
If you feed 2-3x weekly (more aggressive feeding, or managing multiple reptiles): Full-size is efficient. A cup of 20-24 full-size hornworms provides several substantial feedings.
If you feed inconsistently, or you're feeding multiple small species: Nymphs might be better. They're individually smaller, so one nymph per feeding works for smaller reptiles. You're less likely to waste them because smaller portions are easier to portion out. And if feeding timing is irregular, the slightly longer nymph availability window (before they advance too far) gives you flexibility.
Storage and Shelf Life
Nymphs at 50-55°F: 1-2 weeks, with visible size progression throughout that window. Check them every 2-3 days and identify which are the smallest remaining—use those first. As they molt and advance to larger sizes, your individual sizing options shift.
Full-size at 50-55°F: 1-2 weeks, with slower visible change. Most of the usability window is spent at maximum size. In the second week, you might notice darkening or reduced activity as they approach pupation. At that point, remove and discard them—they're preparing to pupate and are unusable as feeders.
The Hybrid Approach
Some keepers with multiple reptiles order both nymphs and full-size in the same purchase, sorting them by reptile size needs. Small reptiles get nymphs, medium get the overlap range, large get full-size. This approach maximizes use of a single order and ensures optimal sizing across multiple animals.
If you do this, sort and separate them immediately upon arrival to avoid nymphs getting lost among full-size individuals. Label containers clearly so you don't accidentally feed the wrong size to the wrong reptile.
Cost and Value
Nymph and full-size hornworms are often priced similarly per cup or per count. Cost-per-feeding might differ—a full-size hornworm provides one significant feeding; a nymph might be a partial feeding for a larger reptile or a full feeding for a small one. Calculate based on your feeding patterns rather than assuming one is inherently "better value."
For example: if you're feeding multiple small reptiles multiple times per week, nymphs might provide more meals-per-purchase. If you're feeding one large reptile 1-2x weekly, full-size is more efficient because each individual represents a complete feeding with no waste.
When in Doubt
If your reptile is on the borderline size-wise, start with nymphs. They're more conservative—a nymph too small is easily removed and replaced, whereas a full-size that's too large for your reptile wastes money and food. Once you've verified your reptile can handle a certain size, you can order with confidence.
Similarly, if you've never used hornworms before, ordering a single cup of nymphs (easier to store, sizing options available, less waste risk) is a gentler introduction than jumping straight to full-size.
The Practical Decision
The choice between nymphs and full-size comes down to three factors: (1) your reptile's size and gape; (2) your feeding frequency and how fast you plan to use them; (3) your comfort level and experience with hornworms.
If your reptile is small or young, use nymphs. If your reptile is adult-sized and you're feeding regularly, use full-size. If you're between sizes or unsure, start with nymphs and upgrade to full-size once you've confirmed your reptile's preferences and feeding pace.
