Discoid Roaches and Reptile Brumation: Feeding Adjustments to Make
Brumation Slows the Whole Feeding Chain
When your reptile goes into brumation—that winter torpor where metabolism tanks and appetite vanishes—everything changes about how much food actually gets consumed. Most keepers understand that the reptile itself needs less, but the second part of that equation is the live feeder colony. If you're still breeding and feeding discoid roaches at pre-brumation rates while your reptile sleeps for months, you're building up a surplus you don't need, wasting resources, and potentially stressing a colony that's not actually being utilized.
Why Appetite Drops During Brumation
Brumation is a metabolic shutdown. Your reptile's body temperature drops, digestion slows or stops, and the urge to eat nearly disappears. A bearded dragon that normally devours 20 roaches a week might take 2 during brumation. A leopard gecko that hunts nightly might ignore food for weeks. This isn't illness or refusal—it's biology. The reptile literally doesn't need the calories because it's burning almost nothing.
The practical implication: overfeeding a brumating reptile can be dangerous. Undigested food sits in the gut and can rot, leading to impaction or infection. So keepers should cut feeding substantially once their reptile shows brumation signs (loss of appetite, reduced activity, temperature-seeking behavior). And that means the feeder colony should scale with it.
Scaling Back Discoid Production
If your reptile's eating 10% of what it usually does, your roach colony doesn't need to grow at full speed. Start by reducing the feeding frequency of the colony itself. During active feeding season, you might gut-load roaches and feed out heavily several times weekly. During the brumation window, drop to once or twice weekly feeding of the colony, reducing the gut-load produce and scaling back the numbers of roaches you're breeding and raising.
This doesn't mean starve the colony—discoid roaches still need to eat—but you can dial back the volume. Fewer roaches being sexed off, slower reproduction, smaller colony size overall. This actually benefits both sides: your roach colony uses less space and resources over the winter, and you're not stuck with excess feeders when spring comes around and feeding resumes.
The timing varies by species. Bearded dragons and some monitors brumate hardest and longest (3–4 months). Leopard geckos might brumate lightly or skip it entirely depending on the individual. Chameleons rarely brumate, but they do eat less in cooler seasons. Know your reptile's normal behavior so you can anticipate the shift.
Feeding Your Roach Colony During the Wait
The roaches themselves shouldn't go hungry just because your reptile is. They still need protein, moisture, and produce. Scale down the colony's diet slightly—fewer roaches means less input needed—but don't withhold nutrition. A roach that's malnourished will be weaker when breeding resumes, and you'll see the effects in offspring size and viability.
Keep water gels refreshed, feed greens or squash once or twice weekly (instead of daily), and maintain the colony environment. The temperature requirements don't change—roaches still need 80–90°F to stay healthy and reproductive. If you're not breeding aggressively during brumation, they'll actually be happier with slightly lower feeding rates and less bustling activity.
When and How to Resume Normal Feeding
As your reptile emerges from brumation, appetite returns gradually. Don't spike feeding volume overnight. Start by offering roaches every other day, watch how many the reptile actually takes, and increase frequency over a week or two as appetite climbs back to normal. This gives the reptile's digestive system time to ramp back up and prevents overshooting with excess feeding.
Mirror that in your roach colony: ramp up the colony feeding and reproduction slowly too. If you've kept numbers down during brumation, you might need to boost the colony for a few weeks to rebuild the feeder stock. But even then, increase gradually—feeding heavily all at once will cause a population explosion that's hard to manage. Plan for the increased feeding, but do it in steps rather than a cliff.
One common mistake is forgetting that brumation affects timing differently for each roach cohort in your colony. If you've had young roaches born during the brumation period while feeding slowed, they'll be smaller and slower to mature when you're ready to boost production again. That's normal—just means you'll have smaller feeders available for a few more weeks as they grow into medium and large sizes. If your reptile needs large roaches specifically, you might need to plan the brumation timeline around your colony's breeding cycle, not fight it.
The Real Benefit: Budget and Balance
Scaling roach colony feeding to match your reptile's brumation isn't about being stingy. It's about matching supply to actual demand, keeping your colony healthy and manageable, and avoiding the waste of overproducing feeders that won't be eaten. A well-timed brumation period can actually give a discoid colony a natural rest cycle—lower feeding pressure, slower reproduction, time for the colony's genetics to stabilize before the next season of heavy feeding and selection. Keepers who work with their reptile's seasonal rhythms, rather than fighting them, usually end up with healthier colonies and less stress overall.
