Can Discoid Roaches Live With Other Feeder Species in the Same Bin?

Resource Competition Matters

The short answer is no. Don't house discoid roaches with other feeder species in the same bin. It might seem efficient—one container doing double duty, fewer maintenance chores—but mixed colonies create more problems than they solve.

Different feeder species compete aggressively for the same resources. Discoids, crickets, dubia roaches, locusts, and mealworms all want the same food, water, and hiding space. In a mixed bin, the more dominant or aggressive species will monopolize the resources. Discoids are social insects with established hierarchies, and they'll defend their territory. Crickets are cannibals and territorial too. Locusts are jumpers and take up a lot of space with their movement. Put them together and you get constant stress and poor nutrition for everyone.

Incompatible Husbandry Requirements

Each feeder species thrives under slightly different conditions. Discoid roaches do well at 75–85°F with moderate humidity (40–60%). Crickets prefer slightly warmer, drier conditions and are more prone to stress-induced jumping and escaping when crowded. Dubia roaches (another popular feeder) actually need higher humidity than discoids and are sensitive to rapid temperature changes. Locusts need dry conditions and a lot of vertical space.

In a mixed bin, you'd have to compromise on temperature and humidity to split the difference. That means nobody gets optimal conditions. Discoids in a cricket-biased environment will slow their reproduction and become sluggish. Crickets in a discoid-biased setup will get stressed faster. Keeping different species separated ensures each gets the exact environment it needs to thrive.

Disease and Parasite Cross-Contamination

Different insect species carry different parasites and pathogens. Crickets can harbor parasites that are tolerable in cricket colonies but cause problems for roaches. The reverse is true too. In a mixed bin, a parasite outbreak that starts in one species can spread to the others. You don't have good visibility into this until you're feeding your reptiles a compromised feeder base.

Bacteria and fungi also move between species more easily in a shared environment. A mild fungal issue in the cricket population might be invisible until your discoids start showing signs of illness. By then, the outbreak is established and harder to address. Keeping species separate gives you clear isolation—if crickets get sick, your discoid colony stays clean.

Maintenance and Cleanup Nightmares

Feeding, watering, and cleaning a mixed bin is messier and more complicated than managing separate colonies. Different species produce waste at different rates and in different forms. Crickets pile feces in certain spots. Roaches distribute theirs more evenly. Locusts create tons of debris. In a mixed container, it's hard to do thorough cleanings without stressing all the species simultaneously.

You also can't remove specific feeders from a mixed bin as easily. If you want to feed some crickets to a particular reptile while saving your discoids, you're either digging through a mixed crowd or you wait. With separate bins, you just reach in and grab what you need. Separate colonies save time and reduce the chance of mistakes—like accidentally grabbing roaches when you meant crickets, or leaving one species neglected because you were focused on the other.

Predation and Cannibalism

Larger feeder species might predate on smaller ones. A roach nymph in a bin with adult locusts or crickets can become a snack, especially if the larger feeders get hungry or crowded. Conversely, roaches are opportunistic and will eat cricket eggs or molt-stage locusts if they're easy targets.

Cannibalism happens in single-species colonies too—it's usually a sign of overcrowding or inadequate nutrition. But in a mixed bin, you've compressed multiple species into the same space, intensifying the stress that triggers cannibalism. You'd actually see worse cannibalism rates in a mixed colony than in separate, properly-maintained single-species bins.

Inconsistent Feeder Quality

When different species compete for resources in a mixed bin, some come out healthier than others. You might end up with excellent-quality discoids and weak, stressed crickets—or vice versa. That inconsistency means you're feeding your reptiles a patchwork of nutritional quality. Your bearded dragon might get a robust, well-fed discoid one week and a nutritionally depleted cricket the next.

With separate colonies, you can ensure each species is maintained at optimal health. Discoids reproduce steadily and grow to consistent sizes. Crickets are kept at ideal density and humidity. You know exactly what your reptile is eating and can make informed decisions about which feeder to use for which animal.

The Management Decision: Separate Bins Win

The convenience of a single mixed bin is not worth the trade-offs. Separate colonies require a bit more space and a few more maintenance tasks, but they give you cleaner husbandry, healthier feeders, and better control over what your reptiles are eating. If space is tight, focus on maintaining one or two species really well rather than trying to manage a mixed colony that's mediocre at best and problematic at worst.

Most serious keepers maintain separate colonies by species. It's the standard approach because it works. The time you invest in maintaining separate bins pays for itself in fewer disease outbreaks, better reproduction rates, and consistently higher-quality feeders for your reptiles.
