What Happens in a Closed Colony
A discoid roach colony started from a single shipment of 50–100 roaches is genetically closed: all animals descend from that founding population. As generations pass—and with discoids, generations pass quickly, roughly 4–6 months from newborn to reproductive adult—the genetic diversity shrinks. Introducing New Stock: Best Practices
When you purchase new roaches, quarantine them for 48 hours in a separate container. Observe them for signs of mites, parasites, or disease. Check that they're the size and quality you expect. Once you're confident they're healthy, introduce them to your existing colony gradually.
Don't dump all the new roaches into the bin at once—they'll stress your existing population, and you may lose animals to fighting or stress. Instead, introduce them over a few days: add a portion of the new roaches, let your colony adjust, then add more. By the end of a week, your full new stock is mixed in.

When buying new roaches to introduce to your colony, source from a reputable breeder. If you're seeing any combination of the following, your colony is probably ready for new genetic material: significantly slower reproduction than it used to show, nymphs that are noticeably smaller or slower-growing than past cohorts, increased molt failure or developmental abnormalities, reduced vigor when stressed (temperature change, food delay), or your reptile showing reduced interest in or difficulty feeding on your roaches.
You don't need to wait for a crisis—proactive introduction of new stock before problems are severe is much easier than trying to revive a genetically depleted colony. A preemptive new-stock introduction takes an hour and costs the price of a shipment. Waiting until the colony is obviously failing can cost weeks of rehabilitation.
The Breeder Advantage
