Can Humans Eat Black Soldier Fly Larvae?
The nutritional answer is straightforward. The regulatory one is not, and the regulatory one is what actually decides whether you will see BSFL in a shop.
The Nutrition
Black soldier fly larvae are roughly 40–50% protein by dry weight, with a fat fraction dominated by lauric acid and a mineral profile notable for calcium. As a human protein source those numbers are respectable.
The Regulation
This is where it gets specific to where you live, and where anything written down goes out of date.
In the European Union, insects for human consumption fall under novel food rules, which require species-by-species authorisation. The species authorised so far are a short list — yellow mealworm, migratory locust, house cricket and lesser mealworm among them. Black soldier fly has been worked through the same process but sits behind those in the queue, and its authorised uses in feed have moved considerably faster than any human-food route.
In the United States there is no equivalent species-by-species novel food list, and the practical questions are food-safety ones: what the insects were raised on, and whether the producer is operating under proper food-production conditions.
The Substrate Problem
This is the real issue and it is not bureaucratic. An insect reflects what it was raised on. The entire economic case for black soldier fly is that it converts low-value organic waste into protein — and waste streams acceptable for producing animal feed are not automatically acceptable for producing human food.
That tension, more than any regulation, is why BSFL has moved into animal feed far faster than onto plates.
Do not eat larvae sold as reptile feeders. They are not produced under food-grade conditions and are not intended for it.
