Discoid Roach Colony Ammonia Smell: Causes and Fixes

A Healthy Bin Has No Smell

One of the biggest advantages of discoid roaches over crickets is their silence and odorlessness. A well-maintained discoid colony should be essentially odorless. If you're smelling ammonia—that sharp, nose-stinging chemical scent—something in the colony is off balance. The good news is that ammonia smell is fixable. It's a signal that the colony needs attention, not that discoid roaches inherently stink. Understanding what causes the smell and how to fix it is straightforward.

The Ammonia Problem

Ammonia in a roach colony comes from two sources: uneaten or decomposing food, and roach waste accumulating in poor ventilation. Roach feces (called frass) contain nitrogen compounds that, when concentrated in a poorly ventilated space, decompose into ammonia gas. The smell develops gradually—you won't wake up to a suddenly reeking bin. More often, over a week or two, a subtle smell becomes noticeable, and by the time you smell it, the ammonia levels are affecting your colony's health.

Ammonia is toxic to insects in concentration. A roach colony breathing ammonia-rich air is stressed, more prone to disease, and reproduces less efficiently. Additionally, when you feed ammonia-exposed roaches to your reptile, you're delivering a less healthy feeder. The solution starts with understanding what you're doing wrong—it's almost always one of three things.

Cause One: Overfeeding Produce

This is the most common cause. Enthusiastic keepers think "more food equals healthier roaches" and overstuff their bins with vegetables and fruit. What actually happens is that uneaten produce spoils in the warm, humid roach bin, fermenting and creating the exact ammonia-rich environment you're trying to avoid.

The fix: Feed your colony only what they'll consume in a day or two. For a 20-gallon bin with 50 to 100 roaches, a small handful of vegetable scraps (carrot, apple, squash) every other day is plenty. Remove any uneaten food after 24 hours. Your roaches are eating the produce you're providing; they're also eating each other's frass and shed skin for extra nutrition. You don't need to overfeed.

Avoid fruit except as occasional treats (once a week at most). Fruit ferments faster than vegetables and accelerates the spoilage problem. Stick to hard vegetables: carrots, winter squash, zucchini, cucumber. Lettuce wilts and spoils quickly—skip it in favor of heartier greens like kale or chard, and even then, offer sparingly.

Cause Two: Poor Ventilation

A roach bin that's sealed or poorly ventilated can't disperse ammonia or moisture. Humidity builds, ammonia concentrates, and the colony becomes stressed. This is especially problematic if you're using a sealed plastic storage tub with just a few small air holes.

The fix: Upgrade to a bin with more substantial ventilation. A 20-gallon clear plastic storage container works well if you cut out one or two sides and replace them with fine mesh (1/16" or smaller—roaches are tiny and can squeeze through larger gaps). Alternatively, drill numerous small holes around the sides of a sealed bin, spaced 2 inches apart, to ensure cross-ventilation. The mesh sides let air flow while keeping roaches contained.

Position your bin in a room with ambient air circulation—avoid sealed closets or cabinets. If your home is very humid, a small fan nearby (not directly on the bin, but in the room) can help. Discoids prefer room temperature and don't need heat, so a cool, well-ventilated spot is ideal.

Cause Three: Inadequate Substrate and Cleanliness

Roach frass accumulates in the substrate. If your substrate is compacted, wet, or simply not cleaned regularly, frass builds up and becomes ammonia-producing. A thin layer of damp substrate without regular cleaning can go anaerobic (lose oxygen), which accelerates ammonia production.

The fix: Use a substrate that absorbs moisture without staying waterlogged. Coconut husk, aspen shavings, or a mix of both works well. Aim for 1 to 2 inches of substrate. Provide a shallow water source—a bottle cap filled with water, or a piece of sponge in a water dish—so roaches can drink without the whole bin becoming sodden.

Every week, do a light "spot clean." Remove obvious frass accumulations, take out any dead roaches, and replace any visibly damp or moldy substrate. You don't need to do a full bin clean-out; just freshen the top layer and remove debris. If the smell is already present, do a deeper clean: remove all roaches to a temporary container, dump and replace all substrate, clean the bin walls with a damp cloth, and return the roaches to a fresh setup. This usually eliminates ammonia within a day.

If You Already Have Ammonia Smell

Act quickly. The longer ammonia builds, the more stressed your roaches become, and the more likely you'll see health problems or population decline.

  1. Stop feeding produce immediately. Let your roaches consume what's left in the bin.
  2. Increase ventilation: prop open the bin lid slightly if it's safe to do so, or move the bin to a better-ventilated area.
  3. Do a partial substrate change: remove the top inch or so of substrate, dispose of it, and add fresh substrate.
  4. Remove any visible dead roaches or mold.
  5. Wait 48 hours. If the smell hasn't improved significantly, do a full substrate change and bin cleaning.

After cleaning, resume feeding: small amounts of vegetables (a thumbnail-sized piece of carrot or squash) every 48 hours. The goal is to find the feeding level your colony can consume without leftovers spoiling.

Prevention Going Forward

Once ammonia is gone, keep it gone by maintaining the basics: adequate ventilation, measured produce feeding, and weekly spot cleaning. Most discoid colonies that follow this pattern never develop ammonia issues. The smell is a sign that one of these three basics slipped, not that discoids are inherently problematic feeders.

A healthy colony is a clean, well-ventilated colony with just enough food to keep roaches thriving. Get that right, and you'll have a reliable, odorless feeder source for years.
