Discoid Roach Starter Colony

Discoid Roach Starter Colony — Breed Your Own Feeders at Home

A discoid roach starter colony is the most cost-effective way to produce a self-sustaining supply of feeder insects for your reptiles. Instead of ordering feeders every week or two, a breeding colony gives you continuous access to roaches in every size — from tiny nymphs for dart frogs and baby geckos to full-grown adults for monitors and tegus — on demand, forever. At All Angles Creatures, our starter colony kits include everything you need to begin: healthy breeding adults, mixed-age nymphs to jump-start production, and the knowledge to succeed.

Why Start a Colony?

If you keep multiple reptiles — or even a single hungry bearded dragon — feeder insect costs add up quickly. A single adult beardie can eat 15-20 discoid roaches per week. Add a leopard gecko, a chameleon, and a monitor, and you are placing orders constantly. A breeding colony eliminates that ongoing expense. After the initial investment and 3-6 months of patience, you will have a self-sustaining feeder factory that produces roaches across all size grades.

Beyond cost savings, breeding gives you complete control over what your feeders eat (and therefore what your reptiles eat), ensures a constant supply of the exact sizes you need, and provides the satisfaction of a fully self-sufficient feeding operation.

Timeline What Happens
Weeks 1-2 Acclimation — roaches adjust to new environment. Little breeding activity.
Weeks 3-6 Breeding begins. Females mate and carry egg cases internally.
Weeks 6-14 First nymphs appear (~60 day gestation). Tiny white babies at bottom of bin.
Months 3-6 Population growth accelerates. Begin harvesting feeders.
Months 6-12 Colony reaches self-sustaining equilibrium for 1-2 reptiles.

What You Need

  • Container: 40+ gallon plastic bin with smooth walls (escape-proof) and ventilated lid
  • Hides: Egg crate flats stacked vertically for surface area
  • Heat: 85-95°F is critical for breeding. Use heat mat on side of bin or ceramic heat emitter.
  • Food: Vegetables (carrots, squash, greens), dry food (dog food, oats, fish flakes), water crystals
  • Patience: Discoid roaches gestate for ~60 days. A productive colony takes months, not weeks.

Sexing and Ratios

Males have full-length wings covering the abdomen. Females have short wing stubs. Maintain a 1:3 to 1:5 male-to-female ratio for optimal breeding output. Our starter colonies come pre-sexed with the right ratio.

Florida Legal Breeding

Discoid roaches are legal in all 50 states — breed at home anywhere in the U.S. without permits. This is a major advantage over dubia roaches, which are banned in Florida and Hawaii.
