Reptile Calcium and Vitamin Supplement Schedule (2026)
Proper supplementation prevents metabolic bone disease — the most common nutritional disorder in captive reptiles. But different species need different schedules, and over-supplementation is as dangerous as under-supplementation for sensitive species like chameleons. This guide provides species-specific schedules based on current veterinary recommendations.
| Species | Plain Calcium | Calcium + D3 | Multivitamin | BSFL (natural Ca) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beardie (juvenile) | Every feeding | Every feeding | 1x/week | Daily (part of mix) |
| Beardie (adult) | Every other feeding | Every other feeding | 1x/week | 2-3x/week |
| Leopard gecko | Every feeding + dish in enclosure | Every feeding (or every other) | 1x/week | 2-3x/week |
| Chameleon (veiled/panther) | Every feeding (light) | 2x/month | 2x/month | 1-2x/week |
| Chameleon (Jackson's) | Every feeding (light) | 1x/month ONLY | 1x/month | 1x/week |
| Monitor/tegu | Every other feeding | Every other feeding | 1x/week | 2-3x/week |
| BTS | Every insect feeding | 2x/month | 1x/week | 1-2x/week |
The BSFL Advantage
BSFL at 9,340 mg/kg calcium with a 6.92:1 Ca:P ratio are the only feeder that does not need calcium dusting. Adding BSFL 1-3 times per week provides a natural calcium safety net that does not depend on the consistency of your powder dusting.
UVB Is Non-Negotiable
Calcium supplements only work if your reptile can absorb them — and absorption requires vitamin D3. Reptiles produce D3 naturally through UVB exposure. Use a T5 HO UVB bulb, replace every 6-12 months, and position at the manufacturer's recommended distance. Without proper UVB, supplementation is largely wasted.
