Powder Blue vs Powder Orange: They Are the Same Species

Powder blue and powder orange isopods are the same animal — Porcellionides pruinosus — in two colour forms. Their care is identical, and neither is better than the other. If you are trying to work out which one to buy on husbandry grounds, you can stop: there is nothing to weigh up.

This trips up almost everyone at some point, because the two are sold under separate names at separate prices and look nothing alike in a photograph. They are still one species.

What Actually Differs

Colour, and that is close to the whole list. Powder orange is the bright orange form and the more popular one in the hobby. Powder blue is a soft blue-grey and sits closer to the wild colouring.

Same size, same humidity, same food, same speed, same breeding rate. A care sheet written for one is a care sheet for the other.

What Happens If You House Them Together

They interbreed — and this is the part worth knowing before you mix them. The offspring are not a neat split of blue and orange. You get oranges, blues, purples, whites and mottled animals, and over generations a mixed culture drifts away from either original colour.

That is either the best reason to mix them or the best reason not to, depending on what you are after. If you want a colony that stays reliably powder blue or reliably powder orange, keep them in separate containers.

So Which Should You Buy?

Whichever you prefer looking at. For a cleanup crew hidden under leaf litter it makes no practical difference at all; for a display enclosure, pick the colour that suits the setup. If you want the mixed colours on purpose, house them together and let them get on with it.

Why the Confusion Persists

Two names, two listings, two prices, two very different photographs. Nothing about how these are sold suggests one animal — including on our own shop, where they sit as separate products because that is how keepers look for them. It is worth saying plainly once: same species, different coat.
