How to Tell If a Hornworm Is About to Pupate (And Why It Matters)

The Hornworm Lifecycle Context

Hornworms progress through a predictable developmental sequence: egg → caterpillar instars → final instar → pre-pupation → pupation → pupa → adult moth. Commercial hornworms sold for feeding are typically in the earlier to middle instars, before they naturally enter pre-pupation. However, depending on age, storage temperature, and development speed, some hornworms in your cup may be approaching or entering pre-pupation—the transition phase immediately preceding the formation of a chrysalis (pupa).

Understanding pre-pupation isn't just academic knowledge; it has practical feeding implications. A hornworm in pre-pupation is past its ideal feeding window and shouldn't be offered to your reptiles.

Sign One: Color Change and Darkening

As a hornworm approaches pre-pupation, its coloration often shifts. The bright blue-green that characterizes healthy, actively-feeding hornworms becomes darker, more muted, or increasingly brownish. Some individuals develop a distinctive dark band or pattern across their body. This color shift is caused by internal physiological changes associated with pupation preparation—the caterpillar is producing different pigments and preparing its exoskeleton for the transformation ahead.

This is the most reliable visual indicator. If you notice hornworms in your cup displaying noticeably darker or browned coloration compared to the more active individuals, you're likely looking at animals in pre-pupation. These individuals should be removed from your feeding stock.

Sign Two: Loss of Activity and Restlessness

Healthy, actively-feeding hornworms spend most of their time engaged with their food source: chewing, moving, and consuming. Pre-pupation hornworms exhibit a behavioral shift: they become restless and hyperactive in an unproductive way. They crawl around without clear purpose, as if searching for something. They may stop eating entirely or eat sporadically. This restlessness is the caterpillar searching for a suitable pupation site—a hardwired behavioral sequence that begins before the physical transition to pre-pupation is complete.

If a hornworm is moving constantly but not eating, and this behavior is new compared to the other hornworms in the cup, pre-pupation is likely underway.

Sign Three: Gut Purging and Changed Appearance

Before pupation, a caterpillar purges its digestive system completely, expelling the contents of its gut. This serves a biological purpose: the emerging pupa needs to be lightweight and metabolically efficient. Practically, this means a pre-pupation hornworm may appear shriveled, deflated, or noticeably thinner than normal individuals. The body loses its firm, plump appearance and becomes somewhat wrinkled or loose-looking.

Additionally, you may observe darker fecal matter being expelled during this phase—the final clearance of the digestive tract. A hornworm that has visibly shrunk and is producing different waste patterns is deep into pre-pupation.

Sign Four: Increased Size (If You're Comparing to Initial Receipt)

Pre-pupation hornworms are typically at their largest. If some individuals in your cup are noticeably larger than others, particularly if you're comparing to your initial order, those larger individuals are likely approaching or in pre-pupation. The size increase reflects completion of the final or near-final instar before pupation. This is straightforward: smaller = younger; larger = closer to pupation.

Why Pre-Pupation Hornworms Matter for Feeding

Nutritional Decline. A pre-pupation hornworm has stopped eating and is purging its gut. It contains minimal active digestive content and represents nutritionally poorer food than an actively-feeding individual. The hydration advantage hornworms provide (85% moisture) begins to decline as the caterpillar shrinks and empties its gut.

Reduced Movement and Feeding Trigger. Without active gut contents and with the behavioral shift toward pupation-site searching, pre-pupation hornworms move less actively and predictably. They lose the wriggling vigor that makes them such effective feeding triggers. A reptile encountering a lethargic pre-pupation hornworm experiences less sensory stimulation than one encountering a vigorous, actively-feeding individual.

Unnatural for Feeding Contexts. Offering a pre-pupation hornworm fundamentally mismatches the prey to its purpose. Hornworms are meant to be fed to reptiles as active, hydrating, appetite-stimulating prey. A pre-pupation hornworm has shifted into an entirely different developmental phase and is no longer suited to that role.

What to Do with Pre-Pupation Individuals

If you identify hornworms showing pre-pupation signs, remove them from your feeding cup. They can be disposed of humanely, or if you're interested in observing the complete lifecycle, you can provide them with an appropriate pupation medium (moist soil or peat moss) and allow them to complete their transformation to pupa. However, from a feeding perspective, they should not be offered to your reptiles.

Fortunately, not all hornworms in a cup will reach pre-pupation simultaneously. Typically, only some individuals will be far enough along to show these signs. Remove only the pre-pupation individuals and continue feeding the active ones to your reptiles. This extends the usable window of your hornworm cup.

Timing and Prevention

The faster you use your hornworms after receipt, the less likely you are to encounter pre-pupation individuals. Hornworms kept at ideal storage temperature (50–55°F) and used within 1–2 weeks rarely display pre-pupation signs. It's the older cups, or the hornworms kept at warmer temperatures that have accelerated development, where this becomes a practical issue.

If hornworms are kept at room temperature and not used within a week, pre-pupation individuals are virtually inevitable. This is another reason to respect the storage temperature window and use your hornworms promptly.
