How Much Waste Can Black Soldier Fly Larvae Actually Process?
Black soldier fly is sold on a single claim: it turns waste into protein. The claim is true. The numbers behind it deserve more care than they usually get.
The Basic Mechanism
A black soldier fly larva eats organic matter and converts part of it into body mass. What it does not convert leaves as frass, plus water and carbon dioxide. The result is a substantial reduction in the mass and volume of the original waste.
Why Any Single Number Is Suspect
Reported reduction rates vary widely, and the reason is that the inputs vary widely. A larva fed on spent brewery grain and a larva fed on fruit market waste are not running the same process.
The variables that move the result:
- Moisture content of the substrate — too dry and feeding slows; too wet and the bin goes anaerobic
- Nutrient density — a nutrient-poor substrate produces less larval mass per kilogram in
- Larval density — both under- and over-stocking reduce efficiency
- Temperature — well outside the warm range they prefer, throughput falls off
Any headline figure quoted without naming the substrate is a figure from one particular trial being used as a general claim.
What Is Solid
Three things hold up regardless of the specifics:
- The reduction in waste mass is large — large enough to matter for anyone handling organic waste at volume.
- The conversion is fast — weeks, against months for conventional composting.
- Both outputs have value. Conventional composting produces one product. This produces protein and a soil amendment.
That third point is the actual argument, and it does not need inflated percentages to work.
