Hornworms for Pet Scorpions: A Feeding Guide

How Scorpions Sense and Hunt Prey

Scorpions are ambush predators that rely heavily on vibration detection. Like tarantulas, they use slit sensilla (specialized sensory organs) to detect movement through the ground or air. A scorpion in its burrow or hiding spot feels the vibrations of approaching prey and responds by moving toward the source. The combination of vibration cues and pheromone trails guides the scorpion to strike with its pedipalps (pincers) and, if necessary, its tail (the venomous telson).

This hunting system evolved to detect hard-bodied arthropods—insects with chitinous exoskeletons that move with distinct, rapid vibration patterns. Speed, hardness, and vibrational signature are the cues that say "prey" to a scorpion's nervous system.

The Mismatch: Soft Bodies and Slow Movement

Hornworms don't fit the sensory profile that scorpions are built to hunt. The worm's soft, undulating movement generates some vibration, but not the staccato, rapid-pulse patterns that reliably trigger a scorpion's predatory response. A scorpion offered a hornworm may sense it, may even approach it, but the strike response is unreliable. Some scorpions will grab it eventually; others will ignore it entirely.

This is especially true for smaller scorpion species, which tend to be more conservative feeders and more dependent on precise sensory cues. Larger scorpions might eat hornworms with less hesitation, but even then, it's not a guaranteed, enthusiastic feeding response the way a cricket or roach would trigger.

Handling and Pincer Concerns

Scorpions subdue prey using their pincers first, then deploy the tail if the prey is large or resists. A hornworm's soft body is vulnerable to pincer damage, but it also doesn't provide resistance. The scorpion's pincers can't get a good grip on something that soft and gelatinous. The worm might slide out or squish, leaving the scorpion frustrated and the feeding attempt incomplete.

For larger scorpion species, a hornworm's size relative to pincer strength might also be awkward—large enough that carrying it is difficult, but soft enough that gripping it causes immediate damage and leakage. This creates unnecessary feeding-attempt failures.

The Case for Occasional Use (Large Species Only)

Large scorpion species—Empusa, some Pandinus varieties, and other robust species 30mm or larger—have proven in some keeper setups to consume hornworms. If you have a large, established scorpion that has shown appetite for a variety of feeders, and you want to provide nutritional rotation, a hornworm might occasionally make sense.

The high moisture content offers hydration support (though scorpions are even more water-conservative than tarantulas, this is still a minor plus). The low fat content means it's not fattening. But the reliability issue remains: it's not a feeder you can count on for consistent feeding success.

Roaches, Crickets, and Other Reliable Options

Scorpions thrive on hard-bodied, fast-moving arthropods. Discoid roaches are ideal—they're sized appropriately for most scorpion species, they trigger immediate predatory responses, and they're nutritionally solid. Crickets also work well. For larger species, occasional grasshoppers provide nutritional variety.

If you're feeding small scorpions, size matters more than for larger ones. Small roaches or crickets that match the scorpion's body size ensure successful feeding without oversizing concerns. None of these alternatives require the same vibrational-matching compromise that hornworms do.

Small Species: Skip Hornworms Entirely

For small scorpion species (under 25mm), hornworms are genuinely not a good fit. The worm's size might be oversized for a small scorpion's handling capacity, the movement pattern doesn't match hunting instincts, and there's no reliability advantage over feeding appropriately-sized roaches and crickets. Small species already have narrow feeding preferences; don't add a mismatch to the equation.

Water and Hydration

Scorpions do need access to water, but like tarantulas, they're water-conservative animals with minimal hydration needs from prey. Providing a shallow water dish or moist substrate is sufficient. The high-moisture profile of hornworms doesn't provide a scorpion-specific advantage the way it does for frogs or some reptiles.

The Bottom Line

Hornworms and scorpions are a poorly matched pairing. Scorpions' vibration-based hunting systems haven't evolved to respond reliably to soft-bodied, slow-moving caterpillars. Unless you have a large, established scorpion with a proven feeding history of eating varied prey, and you specifically want to experiment, skip hornworms. Your scorpion—and your feeding success rate—will be better served by roaches and crickets. These feeders match scorpion predatory biology perfectly and provide nutritionally complete diets without the guesswork.
