Hornworms for Newts and Salamanders

Salamanders and Newts: Diverse Feeders

"Salamander" and "newt" cover an enormous range of animals with very different sizes, feeding behaviors, and habitat requirements. A tiny Plethodon salamander (lungless, terrestrial, mostly) eats prey measured in millimeters. A fire-bellied newt (semi-aquatic, insectivorous) has different mouth dimensions and feeding mechanics than a spotted newt (highly aquatic, smaller-mouthed). The key question isn't "can newts and salamanders eat hornworms?" but rather "can your specific species safely handle a hornworm?"

Generalized "newt diet" or "salamander diet" advice often fails because the diversity is so high. This article focuses on sizing, which is the primary limiting factor for most amphibians when considering hornworms.

Sizing Considerations: The Critical Factor

Hornworms are large compared to most common feeder insects. A typical hornworm can reach 1-1.5 inches in length (larger as it grows toward pupation). For small-mouthed amphibians—which includes most salamanders and many newts—a standard hornworm may simply be too large to capture and consume safely.

If your animal's mouth opening is smaller than a hornworm's body diameter, that animal cannot eat the worm. Simple as that. Attempting to feed oversized prey can lead to injury: the salamander may get its jaw stuck, damage its mouth trying to ingest, or abandon the attempt entirely. Conversely, large-mouthed newts (like some fully aquatic species) can handle hornworms without issue.

Which Species Can Handle Hornworms

Larger newt species—particularly fully or semi-aquatic newts (red-eared newts, alpine newts, mandarin newts at adult size)—can generally consume hornworms without difficulty. Their mouths are proportionally larger, and they've evolved to handle a range of prey sizes. Aquatic and semi-aquatic species often do well with pre-killed hornworms sinking in the water, triggering a feeding response.

Terrestrial salamanders, particularly smaller species and juveniles, often cannot handle standard hornworms. Dusky salamanders, slimy salamanders, and other leaf-litter dwellers are built for tiny prey. Even offering a small (juvenile) hornworm may be problematic. In these cases, smaller feeder insects (small crickets, fruit flies, pinhead roaches) are more appropriate.

Aquatic Delivery vs. Terrestrial Hunting

For semi-aquatic newts, the delivery method matters. A pre-killed hornworm can sink into the water, simulating an injured invertebrate and triggering feeding behavior. This works well and avoids the risk of a live hornworm escaping into the terrarium's terrestrial section. Aquatic newts often readily consume sinking, unmoving prey.

For terrestrial salamanders that can physically handle a hornworm (larger species), offer them live, allowing natural hunting behavior. The movement triggers feeding responses in ways that motionless prey doesn't. However, ensure the salamander's enclosure is secure—a live hornworm that escapes into the substrate is problematic and difficult to remove.

Hydration Value

Salamanders and newts have permeable skin and hydration needs that differ from reptiles. The 85% moisture content of hornworms offers some hydration value, particularly for terrestrial salamanders living in dry-ish conditions. Semi-aquatic and fully aquatic newts get most hydration from their environment, so the moisture benefit is less critical. But it's present regardless and makes hornworms a reasonable occasional supplement.

Feeding Frequency and Rotation

For species that can handle hornworms, offer them as part of a rotating insect diet: 1 hornworm per feeding, 1-2 times per week, alternated with appropriately-sized crickets, roaches, or other insectivorous prey. Never make hornworms the sole diet (they're too soft and lack the nutritional completeness that diet rotation provides).

Juveniles of large species should start with smaller prey and graduate to hornworms as they grow. Young newts and salamanders have proportionally smaller mouths and require appropriately-sized feeders until they reach adult dimensions.

The Honest Answer: Sizing Matters Most

Hornworms can be an excellent supplement for larger salamanders and newts whose mouth dimensions accommodate them. For smaller or small-mouthed species, they're simply not practical. Know your specific species' adult size, mouth capacity, and feeding behavior before attempting hornworms. When in doubt, err on the side of smaller prey. A salamander can never eat too-small prey (it just won't be fully satisfying), but oversized prey causes real injury risks that proper sizing avoids entirely.
