Backyard chicken keepers quickly learn that treats—fresh greens, bugs, table scraps, premium insects—become the currency of flock management. Treats reinforce bonding with your birds, encourage foraging behavior, and provide mental enrichment in an environment that can easily become monotonous. Hornworms rank among the highest-value treats you can offer, rivaling live crickets and scratch grains in the enthusiasm they generate.

A chicken spotting a hornworm will drop whatever it's doing to chase and consume it. That immediate, visceral response isn't just entertaining to watch—it's biologically meaningful. The active movement of a hornworm triggers predatory behavior in ways that passive foods (pellets, scratch) don't. For flocks living in runs or coops with limited natural foraging, hornworms deliver both nutrition and behavioral satisfaction.

Nutritional Value for Poultry

Hornworms deliver 9% protein and 3% fat—respectable numbers that make them a legitimate nutritional contribution, not just a filler treat. For a laying flock, where protein supports egg production and feather maintenance, supplemental high-quality insects matter. The 85% moisture content also helps offset any dehydration risk on hot days, especially for birds living in less-shaded environments.

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (3.07:1) is favorable for poultry, which has relatively high calcium demands compared to many other animals. Laying hens particularly benefit from calcium-forward nutrition, and hornworms' mineral profile aligns well with those needs. They won't replace a complete layer feed, but they meaningfully supplement it.

Feeding Quantities and Frequency

Hornworms are treats, not a poultry staple—even for backyard flocks. Treats should comprise no more than 10% of a chicken's daily caloric intake, with the remaining 90% coming from balanced layer feed or a complete grain diet. In practical terms, this means you can safely offer hornworms 2-4 times per week without creating nutritional imbalance.

Per feeding, offer: 2-3 hornworms per bird for standard-sized chickens (Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds, etc.), 1-2 hornworms for smaller or bantam breeds. A cup of 20-24 hornworms can treat a modest backyard flock multiple times before expiration. If you have a larger flock, you might need multiple cups or must prioritize distribution among favorite birds.

Foraging Enrichment and Behavior

Beyond nutrition, hornworms matter because they trigger natural foraging behavior. A chicken running across a yard, spotting a hornworm, and pursuing it gets exercise, mental stimulation, and the satisfaction of successful predation. This behavioral engagement improves flock welfare in ways that passive treats cannot.

Live hornworms are particularly valuable in this regard. A moving worm generates chase behavior that benefits not only the individual chicken but the entire flock dynamic—subordinate birds may get opportunities to forage or snatch pieces while dominant birds are focused on a primary target. This distributed access promotes more even treat consumption across the flock.

Storage and Safe Offering Practices

Store hornworms at 50-55°F to extend their usefulness to 1-2 weeks. Offer them live and fresh—a dead or moldy hornworm provides no behavioral enrichment and may carry contamination concerns. Before offering, visually inspect: discard any worms showing discoloration, unusual lethargy, or visible mold.

Scatter hornworms across the run or coop rather than throwing them in a pile—this distributes feeding behavior and prevents bullying around a resource. A single energetic hornworm released into an active flock will be pursued and consumed within seconds. Watch briefly to ensure all birds have safe access and no injuries occur from aggressive competition, but typical poultry behavior with live insects is safe and natural.
