This should be determined in consultation with your veterinarian, who can advise based on the severity of disease, the animal's specific condition, and recovery timeline. Some animals also show reduced appetite during MBD or early recovery. Transition Back to Normal Feeding

The hornworm offerings drop from 2-3 times per week back to 1-3 times weekly, then to 1 time weekly as the animal stabilizes. The diet returns to a normal mix of staple feeders with occasional hornworm supplementation.
This transition should be guided by veterinary feedback and, ideally, radiographic monitoring showing bone density improvement. There's no fixed timeline; recovery depends on severity and individual physiology. But the goal is stable, self-sustaining health—not indefinite reliance on therapeutic feeding.
Long-Term Dietary Strategy
After full recovery, a reptile that had MBD benefits from permanent incorporation of calcium-forward feeders into the long-term diet. This doesn't mean hornworms constantly, but rather a deliberate mix: primary staples (roaches, crickets) dusted regularly, with regular hornworm offerings (1-3 times weekly) as a built-in calcium source. This approach reduces the burden of constant supplemental dusting and provides layered calcium intake.
The key is intention: not leaving hornworm inclusion to chance, but deliberately scheduling them as part of the rotational diet to prevent recurrence of calcium deficiency. An animal that had MBD once is at higher risk of recurrence if husbandry slips. Permanent dietary vigilance—including horworm inclusion—is part of managing that risk.
