Hornworms and Water: Do They Need a Separate Water Source?

No. Hornworms do not need a separate water source, water crystals, or any added hydration beyond the formulated chow they come with. They get all the water they need directly from the artificial diet they eat. This is one of the genuine advantages of hornworm husbandry compared to keeping other feeder insects like discoid roaches or crickets.
Why Hornworms Are Already Hydrated
Hornworms are roughly 85% moisture by weight, making them one of the most hydrating feeder insects available. That high water content comes from the chow they eat, which is specifically formulated to provide both nutrition and hydration in one self-contained system. The artificial diet contains enough water to meet their metabolic needs without any supplementary source.
The formulated chow—a wheat-germ and soy-based mix—retains adequate moisture naturally. You don't need to add water to it, mist it, or provide water crystals or gel. The cup arrives ready to feed, and the chow stays adequately hydrated for the entire usable window (1-2 weeks at cool storage temperatures).
Different From Other Feeder Insects
This is a key distinction if you're comparing hornworms to other popular feeders. Discoid roaches, for example, need supplementary water access—keepers typically provide water crystals or a small water dish to prevent dehydration. Crickets can dry out quickly in holding cups and benefit from a moist hiding spot or water source. Dubia roaches require similar hydration management.

Keeping hornworms at 50-55°F slows their metabolism and growth, which is exactly what you want for extending their usable life in a cup. At cooler temperatures, the chow stays fresh and hydrated longer, typically for 1-2 weeks. Warmer storage accelerates their growth and consumption, which shortens that window.
You don't need to add anything to the cup. Don't add water, don't add crystals, don't add substrate or nesting material. The formula works because it's complete as-is. Over-complicating the hydration setup risks introducing mold or creating a wet, rotting environment inside the cup, which would harm rather than help your hornworms.
The Hydration Bonus for Your Reptile
Because hornworms are so moisture-dense, feeding them out provides a genuine hydration boost to your reptile alongside nutrition. This is especially valuable for species that struggle to drink adequate water from traditional sources. Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and other insectivores benefit from the extra water content, which is why hornworms work so well as a supplement feeder rotated in 1-3 times per week.
The high moisture content also makes hornworms visibly appealing to many reptiles. Their bright coloration and wriggling movement trigger feeding responses, but the fact that they're full of hydrating chow makes them a genuinely nutritious choice, not just an exciting visual.
