Mold in Your Hornworm Cup: What to Do

Mold Is a Temperature Problem

Finding mold in your hornworm cup is a bummer, but before you panic, understand that mold in feeder cups is almost always caused by one thing: storing them too warm. The chow in a hornworm cup is formulated to stay stable at 50–55°F. In that temperature range, mold is rare. Above 65°F, especially in a humid environment, mold blooms easily. The first step to fixing this issue is addressing storage temperature, not the cup itself.

Can You Salvage It?

Whether a cup with mold can be salvaged depends on how extensive the mold is and how quickly you catch it.

Light surface mold (small patches, recent appearance): If you spot mold early and it's confined to one area of the chow surface, the cup might still be usable. Carefully remove any visibly moldy chow with a clean utensil (don't introduce contamination). Feed the unaffected hornworms soon. Move the cup to cold storage immediately (ideally below 55°F). The surviving hornworms will likely be fine if they weren't in direct contact with the mold, but this is now a "use immediately" situation, not a cup you can hold for a week.

Extensive mold (spread throughout the cup, or spreading actively): If the mold has taken over more than a small patch, or if it's visibly increasing day to day, the cup is a loss. Mold at this stage is probably producing spores and toxins that make the remaining chow unsafe. Discard the cup.

Never Risk It if Unsure

When in doubt, discard. Feeding hornworms from a heavily molded cup introduces the risk of mold-associated health issues to your reptile. It's not worth saving $15 on a cup of feeders to potentially harm your animal. If you can't confidently say "this is still clean enough to feed," then it's not.

Preventing Mold: The Real Fix

Once you've dealt with the moldy cup, address the root cause: storage temperature.

Where to store: A basement, garage, or dedicated insulated storage area that maintains 50–55°F is ideal. A standard refrigerator shelf works well (make sure the temperature is right—some fridge sections are warmer than others). A small cooler with a temperature controller can work too.

Avoid these spots: Windowsills, shelves next to heat vents, and uninsulated storage areas that fluctuate with room temperature. If you're storing cups in any place where the temperature varies significantly day to night, mold is likely in your future.

Monitor on arrival: When a cup arrives, inspect it immediately for any visible mold. Sometimes shipping conditions are suboptimal and the cup arrives already compromised. If that's the case, contact your supplier and store the cup in cool conditions right away.

Humidity Matters Too

Temperature is the primary factor, but humidity compounds the problem. A warm, humid environment is mold's ideal home. If you're storing hornworms in a warm area that's also humid (like a bathroom cabinet), you're setting yourself up for failure. Cool, dry storage is always better than cool, humid storage, which is better than warm storage.

Use Hornworms on Schedule

The best way to avoid the mold problem altogether is to use your hornworms within their 1–2 week shelf life and reorder regularly instead of stockpiling. A cup that sits around for two weeks, especially if storage conditions are less than ideal, is much more likely to mold than one that's actively being fed from. Plan your feeding rotation with the short shelf life in mind.

Moving Forward

If you've had a moldy cup, your next step is twofold: get a properly temperature-controlled storage solution in place, and shorten your cup-holding time. Don't hold a cup longer than absolutely necessary. Feed your hornworms on schedule, keep storage consistently cool, and inspect cups on arrival. You shouldn't see mold again.
