Hornworm Glossary: Terms Every Keeper Should Know
Instar: The Growth Stages
An instar is a distinct developmental stage in a caterpillar's life between molts. Hornworms progress through five instars, starting as tiny hatchlings and growing to full size before pupation.
1st instar: Just hatched, barely visible, not useful as a feeder.
2nd instar: Still very small, rarely sold.
3rd instar: Beginning to size up, sometimes available but less common.
4th instar: Noticeably larger, active, available but less common than 5th.
5th instar: Full-grown, the size commonly sold as feeders. Bright coloration, vigorous movement, peak appetite trigger.
When you receive a cup of hornworms from a feeder supplier, they're almost always 5th-instar or large 4th-instar specimens. The size is consistent within the cup (all similarly aged), and they're at peak feed-out condition. As you store them and time passes, the 5th-instars will eventually complete their growth and begin the process toward pupation. Understanding the instar concept helps you recognize why storage time is limited—they're not stationary; they're progressing toward the next life stage.
Pupation: Metamorphosis into a Moth
Pupation is the process by which a caterpillar transforms into a pupa (chrysalis) and eventually emerges as an adult moth. For a hornworm keeper, this is the end of the feeding window.
When a hornworm senses it's at the end of its larval development—triggered by size, age, or environmental cues like temperature—it becomes restless. It stops feeding actively, seeks shelter, and anchors itself with silk strands. Over the next few hours to a day, it darkens and hardens as the final larval skin splits and the pupa forms underneath.
A pupa is hard, inactive, and unappealing as a feeder. It won't trigger a predatory response. More importantly, if a pupa is accidentally fed to a reptile, it could cause impaction or injury depending on the animal's size.
This is why hornworm storage is time-sensitive. Without cool temperature to slow development, pupation begins within a week or two of hatching. With proper cool storage (50–55°F), you extend the larval window to 1–2 weeks or more, pushing pupation further out.
Chow: The Formulated Diet
Hornworms don't eat tobacco or tomato leaves as they do in the wild. Commercially raised hornworms are fed on artificial chow—a formulated diet based on wheat germ, soy, and other plant ingredients. This is a critical misconception to clear up for any keeper worried about nicotine or other toxins.
The chow is mixed with water to create a paste-like medium that fills the bottom of a hornworm container. The caterpillars burrow into it, feed on it, and deposit frass into it. As a keeper, your job is to ensure the chow stays moist enough to be palatable and not so wet that it molds.
If chow dries out entirely, hornworms will dehydrate and die. If it becomes too wet or moldy, the colony declines. The balance is simple: lightly mist with water if it looks dry; maintain good air circulation to prevent mold.
The chow's composition determines part of the hornworm's nutritional profile. Higher-protein chows can produce hornworms with slightly different ratios than lower-protein alternatives, but the commercial hornworms you buy from feeder suppliers are made on standard formulations, so you're receiving a consistent product.
Frass: Insect Feces
Frass is feces. In a hornworm cup, you'll see dark pellets and granular material mixed through the chow. That's frass—waste produced as the caterpillars feed and digest.
Keeping track of frass accumulation matters because it compacts the chow and reduces air circulation. If a container becomes too frass-heavy, it can create anaerobic conditions that promote mold or bacterial growth. Periodically remove excess frass during storage by scooping out the most contaminated portions and adding fresh chow if needed.
Frass also indicates that the hornworms are actively feeding and healthy. A container with minimal frass might suggest the caterpillars aren't feeding well, which could mean they're near pupation, stressed, or the chow is too dry.
Gut-Purge: Clearing the Digestive System
A gut-purge is the practice of feeding hornworms (or other feeders) a clean, nutritious diet for 24–48 hours before offering them to a reptile. The idea is that whatever the feeder insect ate last gets digested and passed through, leaving the gut filled with high-quality nutrition that will benefit the eating reptile.
For hornworms, a gut-purge typically involves transferring them to fresh chow or a specialized gut-load formula for 1–2 days before feeding them out. This is less critical for hornworms than for crickets (which might have eaten questionable things in breeding conditions), but it's a practice some keepers use to maximize nutritional value.
The practical impact is small—the nutritional profile of the hornworm itself doesn't change dramatically based on 24 hours of different food. But philosophically, it ensures that everything the reptile consumes is accounted for and intentional.
Tobacco Hornworm vs. Tomato Hornworm: The Species Question
Wild hornworms are garden pests that feed on specific plants. The tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and the tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) are closely related species that eat nightshade family plants—tobacco and tomato, respectively.
Commercially raised hornworms used as feeders are from both species, and honestly, they're sold interchangeably. For feeding purposes, there's no practical difference. Both are roughly the same size, color, and nutritional value. Both are raised on artificial chow, not on any plant material.
The species distinction matters if you're interested in entomology or if you're worried about the "wild feeding" aspect. But for keepers, the takeaway is simple: the hornworms you're buying are captive-raised on formulated diet, not wild-caught, and not fed on tobacco or tomato leaves regardless of species. If anyone ever expresses concern about nicotine or toxins, you can confidently explain that commercial hornworms are raised entirely on artificial chow.
Larval (or Larva): The Developmental Form
Larva (singular) or larvae (plural) refers to the worm stage of an insect's life cycle—in this case, the caterpillar. A hornworm, from hatching until pupation, is in its larval stage. An adult moth is the final stage.
You'll hear keepers say "larval hornworms" or just "larvae" when talking about the feeding form. It's a technical term that clarifies we're talking about the caterpillar, not the moth (which no one feeds to reptiles—it would be bizarre).
Colony Versus Batch: Understanding the Difference
This isn't purely a hornworm term, but it's useful to understand in feeding contexts. A colony is a self-sustaining population—think discoid roaches, which breed and produce offspring indefinitely as long as conditions are right.
A batch is a one-time group with a defined lifespan. A cup of hornworms is a batch. They won't breed in your container (they never reach adulthood in your care). They'll all eventually pupate or be consumed. There's no hornworm "colony" you maintain—just a series of batches ordered on rotation as needed.
Understanding this distinction helps you plan your feeding strategy. Discoid roaches? Colony thinking: invest time upfront, benefit long-term. Hornworms? Batch thinking: plan the purchase, use the window, order again when needed.
