Hornworms are named after their natural hosts—tobacco and tomato plants. In the wild, a tobacco hornworm (*Manduca sexta*) or tomato hornworm (*Manduca quinquemaculata*) caterpillar spends its life chewing on these plants. But here's what matters for keepers: commercially raised feeder hornworms don't eat any plants at all. They're raised on a formulated artificial diet, and understanding what that diet contains is crucial for accurately assessing their nutritional value and safety.

The Formulated Diet: Wheat Germ and Soy

Commercial hornworm breeding facilities raise hornworms on a nutrient-formulated chow, typically wheat-germ and soy-based. This is a standardized, balanced artificial diet specifically designed to support rapid growth and good health in captive-raised caterpillars. It's the same approach used in other mass-bred insect industries: it's scalable, consistent, and reliable.

This diet is carefully balanced for protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals to ensure the hornworms grow predictably and remain healthy in storage. Some keepers ask whether they should feed hornworms leafy greens or calcium supplements before offering them to their reptiles. The honest answer: it won't hurt, but it's not necessary and won't significantly change the hornworm's nutritional value. A hornworm's nutrient profile is already set by its formulated diet during the growing phase. Feeding it greens for a day or two before your reptile eats it doesn't meaningfully alter that profile.

If you want to offer hornworms alongside a proper feeding rotation that includes gutloaded roaches or other insects with more customizable nutrition, that's fine—use hornworms for their role as a hydration and appetite-trigger supplement, and rely on your protein staple for consistent gutloaded nutrition.
