Do BSFL Smell? The Honest Answer

Do BSFL Smell? No — When Stored Properly

Live BSFL stored in the refrigerator are virtually odorless. You can keep them in the fridge for 2-3 weeks without detecting any smell. This is one of their biggest practical advantages over crickets, which produce a strong ammonia-like odor within days.

When BSFL Can Develop Odor

The only situations where BSFL may produce odor:

  • Dead larvae decomposing: If some BSFL die in storage and are not removed, the decomposing bodies produce a noticeable smell. Fix: check weekly and remove any dead (black, limp) larvae.
  • Left at room temperature too long: BSFL at room temp are more metabolically active and produce more waste. At fridge temperature, metabolism is near zero and odor is nonexistent.
  • Sealed container with no ventilation: A completely airtight container can build up CO2 and waste gases. Fix: ensure a few small holes in the lid.

BSFL Smell vs Other Feeders

Feeder Odor Level
BSFL (refrigerated) None
Discoid roaches None
Silkworms None (if food is fresh)
Mealworms Mild bran odor
Crickets Strong ammonia — within 2-3 days

BSFL tie with discoid roaches as the least smelly feeder insects available. Both are dramatically cleaner than crickets.

Tips for Zero-Odor BSFL Storage

  1. Refrigerate immediately at 50-55°F
  2. Remove dead larvae weekly
  3. Ensure lid has ventilation holes
  4. Use within 2-3 weeks
