Why Discoid Roaches for Hatchling Leos
Leopard gecko hatchlings need frequent, appropriately sized meals to fuel their rapid early growth. Discoid roaches fit that role better than most live feeders. They're calm, nutritionally dense—roughly 20% protein, 7% fat, with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 0.77:1—and come in sizes that scale perfectly from the tiniest hatchlings up through juveniles. Unlike crickets, they don't bite, produce odor, or climb smooth surfaces, which means a dropped roach in the enclosure stays there instead of hiding in a corner for weeks.
Hatchling leopard geckos also benefit from a feeder that doesn't stress them. Discoids are slower, more deliberate feeders than crickets, giving hatchlings a better chance to strike at their own pace without the chaos of hyperactive prey.
Nymph Sizing for Hatchlings
The key to hatchling feeding is matching roach size to gecko mouth size. A roach that's too large teaches bad habits—the hatchling either won't strike, or it will, and the struggle exhausts them. A roach that's too small provides minimal nutrition for the work it takes to catch.
Discoid roaches ship in three standard sizes. For hatchling leopard geckos, you're looking at the small nymphs—roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. These are the just-right size for a hatchling's tiny mouth. The nymphs at this stage are thin and soft-bodied, making them easy to consume. As your hatchling grows into its first few weeks, you'll gradually move toward the larger small nymphs and eventually medium-sized roaches, but those first nymphs are where you start.
When you receive your discoid roaches, they arrive gut-loaded with organic produce, meaning they're already nutritionally primed for your gecko. You don't need to do anything special beyond releasing them into the feeding enclosure or container.
Feeding Frequency for Hatchlings
Hatchling leopard geckos are eating machines. Their metabolism is in overdrive, and they need to eat often to support growth. Most keepers feed hatchlings 6 to 7 days a week, with 5 to 10 small discoid nymphs per feeding session, depending on the gecko's enthusiasm and size.
Start conservatively—offer 5 nymphs, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and watch how many your hatchling actually eats. Some hatchlings are aggressive feeders immediately; others take a day or two to warm up. After a few feedings, you'll know whether your gecko wants more or is satisfied with fewer. The goal is to provide enough that your hatchling's belly has a slight roundness to it after eating, but not so much that uneaten roaches accumulate in the enclosure.
Remove any uneaten roaches after 30 minutes. Discoids won't damage an enclosure or climb out the way crickets might, but they will slowly consume plant matter and decorations if left long-term, and you want to track how much your hatchling is actually consuming.
Transitioning to Larger Roaches
At around 8 to 12 weeks of age, most hatchling leopard geckos are ready for medium-sized discoid roaches. This isn't a hard deadline—go by your gecko's growth and comfort level. If small nymphs still fit, there's no harm in staying with them a while longer. But once your hatchling's jaw has noticeably grown, medium roaches become more efficient nutritionally.
Make the switch gradually. Over a week or two, start replacing half your feeding with medium roaches and half with small nymphs. Most hatchlings take to the larger roaches immediately because they've already learned the discoid predation pattern. A few prefer to stick with small nymphs longer—let them guide you.
Storage and Feeding Logistics
Keep your discoid roaches in a secure, well-ventilated bin at room temperature. Unlike crickets, they won't breed at a runaway pace if kept cool, and they don't require heating. A shoebox-sized tub with a substrate layer of coconut husk and a water source works fine. Feed your roaches fresh produce every few days—vegetables, not fruit—to keep them gut-loaded for your gecko.
Many keepers keep a separate small "feeding enclosure" or shallow dish for releasing roaches to their gecko during feeding time. This lets you control the count and makes cleanup easier. A simple shallow plastic container works; just make sure the roaches can't climb out. Discoids can't climb smooth vertical surfaces, so a plastic takeout container is perfect.
Colony Health Matters
A healthy, thriving discoid colony gives you the nutritional reliability your hatchling needs. Keep the colony clean, avoid overfeeding produce (uneaten food spoils and creates ammonia), and remove dead roaches promptly. Healthy roaches are lively and responsive; a sluggish, slow colony signals overfeeding or poor ventilation.
Because you're breeding your own colony specifically to feed hatchlings, their welfare is directly tied to your gecko's growth. It's not extra work—it's just consistent, basic colony management. A handful of minutes a week keeps everything thriving.
